Myths About Bipolar Affective Disorder: The Role of Structured Group Psychoeducation Therapy
Bipolar Affective DisorderThis study will examine: 1) The impact of psycho education group therapy sessions relating to beliefs/myths associated with bipolar affective disorder (BAD) on the emotional wellbeing, clinical course and cognition of individuals diagnosed with BAD 2) Will examine the existence of those same beliefs among the various caregivers - psychiatrists, general practitioners, social workers, and psychiatric nurses. The investigators hypothesize that psychoeducation group therapy will be effective in refuting the myths and will lead to better treatment adherence, longer remissions, fewer hospitalizations, improved self esteem, increased optimism, and better control over the disease process. The investigators also believe that they will identify some beliefs/myths or preconceived notions that are common to both caregivers and individuals with BAD.
Imaging 5HT7 Antagonist Effects in Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar DisorderThe main aim of this research is to examine the potential of 5HT7 antagonists for the treatment of cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder by determining the effect of the 5HT7 antagonist JNJ-18038683 on cognitive and emotional processing related brain activity in cognitively impaired people with bipolar disorder and healthy participants using functional MRI (fMRI). This study is designed to contribute to the rational validation of 5HT7 antagonists as a treatment for cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder and to support the development of clinical trials and further drug development in this area. The study will also examine the effect of 5HT7 antagonism on brain function in healthy participants as this has never been investigated before, and to use as a comparator to determine whether 5HT7 antagonism effects disease specific impairments in task related brain activity and cerebral blood flow.

The MoB EI will be developed according to qualitative data on patients' educational needs and relevant literature. The effectiveness of acquired knowledge and self-management skills will be assessed according to the degree of a) cognitive functioning, b) impulse control, c) adherence to pharmacotherapy, d) relapse prevention, d) improvement of quality of life of participants.

DepressionBipolar DisorderBipolar disorder (BPD) is often misdiagnosed as unipolar depression. This leads to inadequate treatment and can have negative impact on the course of the disease. There is now preliminary evidence that patients with unipolar and bipolar depression as well as healthy individuals with a heightened risk of BPD can be distinguished from each other based on their brain activity patterns and functional connectivity during resting state. However, the impact of pharmacological treatment on these functional brain measures have not yet been clarified. For common antidepressants it has been shown that they seem to normalise aberrant brain activity patterns and functional connectivity. The problem is that some antidepressants can induce mania or accelerate pathological cycling in depressive patients with unrecognised BPD. Therefore, pharmacological drugs with mood-stabilising properties such as quetiapine are more and more prescribed. Although the effectiveness and tolerability have been proven, the neuronal effects of these adjunctive treatments are not clear. The aim of the study is thus to investigate the impact of quetiapine on measures of brain activity in depressive patients with a heightened risk of BPD. Moreover, the investigators want to examine whether the investigators can distinguish depressive patients with a heightened risk of BPD from depressive patients without a heightened risk of BPD using neuroimaging techniques, and whether these measures can predict the course of the disease.

Partnership in Medication Management (PIMM) in Patients With Mood Disorders
Major Depressive DisorderBipolar DisorderInvestigators are doing this study to examine if a new personalized education program for patients with mood disorders (depression and bipolar disorders) will help them take their medications as prescribed by doctors. Investigators will teach patients about how, when and why it is important for them to take their medications as prescribed. Also, investigators will ask patients why they do not take medications as prescribed. Furthermore, investigators will examine whether our education program might save money if it prevents problems related to not taking medication.

Emotions in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorders: a Common Vulnerability?
Bipolar DisorderSchizophreniaThe initial aim of the project was to gain an understanding of the comprehension of "language-oriented" emotions among schizophrenic and bipolar patients. By "language-oriented" emotions, the investigators mean the emotions that are conveyed by means of language, whether through the emotional valence of the words, the expression of an emotional state or emotional prosody. Although they involve different diagnostic categories, schizophrenic and bipolar disorders nevertheless share a number of symptoms, in particular in the emotional sphere, and do so to such an extent that the question of whether there may, at the clinical, cognitive and etiopathogenic levels, exist a continuum between these disorders is frequently raised. Taking this hypothesis of a clinical continuum as our starting point, the investigators explored the understanding of emotions contextualized by language in these two clinical populations, namely patients exhibiting schizophrenic and bipolar disorders. To these populations, the investigators also added the dimension of vulnerability in the form of non-clinical participants varying in terms of their traits of schizotypy and hypomania, thus orienting this project toward the early identification of cognitive-emotional markers and possibly also their prevention.
