Yoga in Unipolar and Bipolar Disorders

Bipolar DisorderMajor Depression1 more

Major depression, chronic depression and bipolar depression are complex and difficult disorders to treat. They are often associated with residual symptoms with significant functional impairment. Yoga has been shown to be beneficial in treating depressive symptoms but without the added risks associated with medication use and has the advantage of high consumer appeal (with likelihood of good compliance). However, it has only been tested in unipolar depression, thus far. Yoga if shown to be effective (as an adjunctive to pharmacotherapy) in improving residual symptoms and decreasing risk of relapse, would be of significant long-term benefit to patients not only with major and chronic depression, but also for those with bipolar disorder. The aim of the study is to determine the safety and effectiveness of Yoga as an augmentation treatment to pharmacotherapy and in comparison to psychoeducation, in improving residual symptoms of depression over 16 weeks and in prevention of relapse/recurrence of mood episodes over 1 year, in subjects with unipolar and bipolar disorders.

The Effect of Intranasal Insulin on Neurocognitive Function in Euthymic Patients With Bipolar Disorder...

Bipolar Disorder

It is hypothesized that the intranasal administration of insulin will enhance hippocampal-dependent neurocognitive performance in euthymic patients with bipolar I or II disorder. This novel initiative represents a proof-of-concept study that insulin is salient to neurocognitive functioning and deficits in bipolar disorder and represents a novel and safe therapeutic avenue. The available literature suggests that the acute administration of intranasal insulin enhances cognition in memory impaired older adults with either Alzheimer's disease or minimal cognitive impairment. Prior research demonstrates a cognitive enhancing effect of insulin within one hour of the first intranasal insulin dose. Other studies suggest that the long-term administration of intranasal insulin (i.e. over eight weeks) in enhances memory performance in human volunteers. We aim to evaluate the acute and long-term effects of intranasal insulin administration in persons with bipolar disorder. As such we will be conducting the neuropsychological testing at three time points, the week before receiving insulin, within one hour of the first dose and after 8 weeks of insulin administration.

An Open-label Trial of Metformin for Weight Control of Pediatric Patients on Antipsychotic Medications....

SchizophreniaSchizoaffective Disorder3 more

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of metformin treatment in children and adolescents suffering from weight gain secondary to use of atypical antipsychotic medications. In this 12 week, open-label study we will investigate metformin's effects on weight control and/or weight loss. We hypothesize that metformin would prevent further weight gain or lead to weight loss, resulting in amelioration of one of the most significant side effects of atypical antipsychotic use.
