Intravenous Lidocaine for Cystectomy Procedures

Invasive Bladder Cancer

Patients scheduled for a cystectomy at Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) will be enrolled into a randomized, double blinded clinical trial to assess if postoperative pain and ileus are reduced by perioperative intravenous lidocaine infusion versus placebo. The hypothesis is that patients receiving the lidocaine infusion will experience better pain control and ileus resolution. It is believed that lidocaine patients will also have less opioid requirement, less mortality, a shorter length of stay, less nausea /vomiting, and fewer adverse events.

Acupuncture for the Treatment of Intravesical BCG-Related Adverse Events in High-Risk Non-muscle...

Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma In SituRecurrent Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma4 more

This phase II trial studies the safety and feasibility of utilizing acupuncture in patients with high-risk bladder cancer that has not spread to the surrounding muscle (non-muscle invasive) undergoing treatment with Intravesical BCG. BCG is a weakened form of the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis that does not cause disease. It is used in a solution to stimulate the immune system in the treatment of bladder cancer. Unfortunately, many patients experience side effects such as pelvic pain, painful urination, severe urgency, frequency, urge incontinence, need to urinate at night, and/or infectious complications. These side effects may cause patients to delay or stop BCG treatment. Acupuncture is a medical intervention in which fine metallic needles are inserted into anatomical locations of the body to stimulate the peripheral and the central nervous system. Giving acupuncture before each intravesical BCG treatment may help to reduce the side effects of intravesical BCG, and help patients complete treatment. Specific outcomes of interest include acceptability to patients, effect of acupuncture on intravesical BCG-related side effects, and adverse events associated with acupuncture.

Sexual Quality of Patients After Bladder Cancer Cystectomy

Sexual Dysfunction

Bladder cancer is the second most prevalent urological cancer in France. About 1 in 5 new cases of bladder cancer infiltrate the muscles. The standard treatment is neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by radical cystectomy associated with reconstruction of the urinary tract. The short-term effects on well-being and quality of life are well known. The long-term effects are, on the other hand, poorly understood, particularly sexual function. This study aim to asses the quality of sexual life in patients with cystectomy for bladder cancer. This will be done via various questionnaires given before and after surgery.

Bladder Cancer

The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cell and urine levels of Gemcitabine and its metabolites, 30 mins or 2 hours post infusion, predict response to GemX chemoradiation at first check cystoscopy, 3 months from the end of radiotherapy.
