ElectromyographyExercise2 moreClosed kinetic chain (CKC) exercises are exercises in which body weight is carried on the distal segment. It is considered advantageous and reliable in many respects compared to open kinetic chain exercises (OKC). For the restoration of functional stability in shoulder rehabilitation, it is recommended to use CKC exercises that carry body weight from the early period. Plank exercise, which is frequently used to strengthen the core area in rehabilitation programs, is performed by transferring weight on the upper extremity. For this reason, it is thought that this exercise will provide an isometric load on the shoulder and scapula muscles. In many previous studies, it has been observed that scapular muscle activations also change with the changes in stability (support surface properties, etc.) in plank exercises and variations in a way that provides a more stable exercise environment. However, as the difficulty level of the used moving floor increased (using softer or unstable surfaces), it was seen that the increase in muscle activation levels was more in favor of the upper trapezius muscle (UT). In a study, it was observed that the UT / Middle Trapeze (MT), UT / Lower Trapezius (LT), UT / Serratus Anterior (SA) ratios were lower in the 3-point supported plank exercise performed on one hand. For this reason, it is thought that while the difficulty level of plank variations is increased in shoulder rehabilitation, body position changes will be more effective in maintaining optimal scapular muscle activation rates instead of using a moving floor. Based on this information, investigating the muscular activation levels for the scapular and shoulder girdle muscles during different variations of the plank exercise in terms of load levels in the targeted muscles will provide valuable information for the management of shoulder exercise programs and post-operative rehabilitation. It was planned to include 21 healthy physically active individuals between the ages of 18-45 in the study. Muscle activation levels during maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of each muscle will be recorded to normalize muscle activation levels during plank variations. Muscle activation levels will be evaluated with a surface electromyography device (Noraxon, Myomotion, USA).

Spinal Cord InjuriesObesity2 moreThis study's overarching aim is to follow a systematic approach that incorporates community-based participatory research (CBPR) to develop a multi-component weight loss intervention that may yield significant effects for a chronic SCI sample. The approach is to obtain data on the 3 unique strategies (prepackaged/portion-controlled meals; enhanced self-monitoring; the GLB-SCI) to inform design of an empirically supported and consumer-validated multicomponent intervention program, that combines the best of the 3 approaches into one unique intervention, the GLB SCI+. Based on the investigators' prior experience with adapting and delivering the GLB AIM (a lifestyle intervention previously adapted for those with impaired mobility), interim findings, existing literature, and consumer feedback, they hypothesize that these 3 unique strategies may confer individualized benefits to people with SCI given their complex disability-related barriers to weight loss.

Non Communicable DiseasesBlood Pressure9 moreThis is an academic evaluation of a program being implemented by the Ambuja Cement Foundation (ACF). The aim of the evaluation is to determine the effect of the ACF noncommunicable disease (NCD) program on (1) fasting blood glucose (a biomarker of diabetes), (2) systolic blood pressure, (3) diastolic blood pressure, and (4) body weight. ACF will be implementing a program on NCD management. Due to resource constraints, the program will be implemented stepwise (e.g. four villages in the first 6 months then an additional four villages added every 6 months over the next 12 months). In order to improve the interpretation of the evaluation data, the team will randomize the order in which the program is implemented in the 12 villages. The design is therefore a stepped wedge randomized cluster trial. This design is ideal for (1) minimizing the practical, logistical, and financial constraints associated with large-scale project implementation, (2) control for the effect of time, and (3) ensure that all villages in the project are eventually offered the intervention.

WeightThe effects of non-nutritive sweetened (NNS) beverages on weight management and psychological indices of appetitive behaviour have not been assessed in both weight loss and maintained weight loss phases over the long term to determine whether NNS beverages may assist in efforts to lose weight and maintain weight loss and how this affects appetite expression (satiety, food choice, craving, ease of dieting etc.). Thus the present research will determine the impact of NNS beverages as compared to water on weight loss and weight loss maintenance, satiation, satiety, cravings for sweet, exercise efforts and mood state across both a period of weight-loss as well as a weight-maintenance phase. To determine if the effects of NNS on appetite are beneficial or detrimental to successful weight management, the study will also systematically compare the effects of NNS beverages, water and caloric beverages (CBs) on appetite (hunger, satiety, liking and wanting) and energy intake (including food choice and caloric compensation) across the whole day during active weight management in a subset of participants.
