Gestational DiabetesWeight Gain During Pregnancy1 moreThe IBEP study is a randomized control trial of a healthy lifestyle intervention program for women with gestational diabetes. The primary aim of the study is to evaluate whether women with gestational diabetes enrolled in an intensive behavioral educational program (IBEP) demonstrate lower mean fasting glucose levels measured by 2 hour 75 gram oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at 6 weeks postpartum compared to women with gestational diabetes who undergo routine gestational diabetes education and counseling.

Impact of Volunteer Peer-Led Intervention for Weight Control in Primary Care
Weight LossThe specific objective of this research proposal is to determine the short-term efficacy of a primary care-based weight control intervention in which successful volunteer peers deliver a group-based program. The purpose of the study is to conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) of a successful volunteer peer-led weight control program compared to a control condition to determine intervention efficacy at 3 months. Six peer leaders from 2 primary care clinics will be recruited and trained to conduct the intervention. Overweight and obese patients (n=80) will be recruited (randomized by individual) to determine weight loss at 3 months (primary outcome). The program consists of 12 weekly weight loss sessions led by a successful volunteer peer leader using an adaptation of the Diabetes Prevention Program to help participants lose weight.

InfantVery Low Birth Weight1 moreThis study will test the effectiveness of breast milk expression discharge instructions in digital video disc (DVD) format for home use by mothers of very low birth weight infants on the dose and duration of mother's breast milk feeding in their infants compared to breast milk expression discharge instructions in printed format. The investigators hypothesize that infants whose mothers receive breast milk expression discharge instructions via DVD will receive a larger dose of maternal breast milk and for longer duration during the initial neonatal intensive care unit hospitalization than infants whose mothers receive discharge instructions in printed format.

The investigators propose that participants randomized to the intervention arms will lose significantly more weight than those participants randomized to the control group.

Body WeightLipids2 moreThe aim of this study is to compare the effects of flaxseed on atherogenic lipids, plasma inflammatory markers, and insulin sensitivity. We hypothesize that flaxseed omega-3 fatty acids will improve the lipid profile (decrease triglyceride, total and LDL-cholesterol and increase HDL-cholesterol). Flaxseed is the richest dietary source of lignan secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG). Lignans are estrogens found in plant sources that behave similar to endogenous estrogens and have been associated with cardiovascular benefits due to their antioxidant activity. Therefore, we also hypothesize that flax-lignans will cause a significant decrease in LDL oxidation and in inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-1B, serum fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP-4), and serum amyloid attached to high density lipoprotein (HDL-SAA).
