Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes - Raising the Issue of Weight Management in Primary Care

Weight ManagementDiabetes Mellitus1 more

To ensure that patients who are overweight or obese and have type 2 diabetes are identified, receive personalised diabetes care, have the issue of weight raised and explained in a non-judgemental manner by staff in primary care, and are referred on to weight management services as appropriate ensuring equity of access across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Specific aims of the whole project: To improve GP/ primary care staff knowledge of the evidence base for the management of diabetes when there is co-existing obesity and local care pathways To increase GP/ primary care staff knowledge of and confidence in their role in raising the issue of weight management, To improve primary care referral rates of appropriate patients who are overweight or obese and have type 2 diabetes, and are "ready to change" to NHS funded weight management services To improve patient uptake of and attendance at NHS funded weight management services NB This is a service evaluation of a training programme being delivered by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Improvement. Full ethical approvals are being sought due to the randomised design and so that results can be generalised and published.

Baropodometric Parameters Variation With Body Weight Loss

Postural ImbalanceObesity

Background: One of the major public health problems of the 21st century is obesity. Baropodometry is commonly used to determine specific loads on the plantar surface of the foot and the comportment of the body center of pressure (CoP). To evaluate the redistribution of the baropodometric parameters: static and dynamic plantar pressures and antero - posterior CoP, by decreasing body weight. Methods: A sample of 43 overweight subjects (24 male, 19 female) would be recruited for the study. A hypocaloric diet would be designed with the aim to reduce participants body weight. The baropodometric exam would performed in two occasions: weight 1 - Session 1 and weight 2 - Session 2, when participants lost between 12 and 18 kg. The foot would be divided in 9 areas: heel, midfoot, 5 metatarsal heads (MTHs), Hallux, 2-5 toes. The Footwork® pressure platform would be used to carry out the evaluation.

Olfactory Stimulation for Very Low Birth Weight Infants

Very Low Birth Weight Infant

This is a RCT study examining whether odor administration to mothers of very low birth weight infants promotes stabilization of vital signs compared with common nursing care. This study used breast milk olfactory stimuli familiar and liked by premature infants to understand the effects of olfactory stimuli on the physiological indicators of very low birth weight infants, the effect on the time of complete enteral nutrition, and the effects on growth and development of very low birth weight infants.

Messages and Plans to Increase Gym Utilization

Body Weight

This primary object of this study is to test to the hypothesis that the both the nudge and boost messages will increase short term gym utilization relative to the control condition but that only the boost message will increase long-term gym utilization. Non-technical summary: College students will receive one of three messages about exercise. Their card swipe data as a measure of gym utilization will be tracked as an assessment of the effect of those messages.

Beverage Consumption and Fine Motor Control

Body Weight

The aim of this study will be to compare the effects of daily consumption of aspartame, rebaudioside a, saccharin, sucralose, and sucrose on body weight and composition in a standardized protocol. The investigators hypothesize that individual low calorie sweeteners (consumed in a beverage) differ from each other in promoting weight loss and decreased fat mass (without energy restriction or dietary guidance) based on their chemical structure.

Emergency Contraception and Body Weight: Pilot Study

ContraceptionBody Weight

The purpose of this research study is to determine how body weight changes the drug level of an emergency contraceptive pill containing a hormone called levonorgestrel (LNG). This emergency contraceptive is available to women without a prescription, but has recently been found to not work as well to prevent pregnancies in women of higher body weight. The overall goal of this research is to improve the effectiveness of contraception for women, no matter their weight.

Effects of Whole Grain on Weight Maintenance

Abdominal FatBody Weight

Epidemiological studies suggest that whole grain consumption affects measures of obesity including BMI, body fat tissue, and body weight. Most cross-sectional studies demonstrate rather consistently an inverse association between BMI and whole grain consumption. Furthermore, prospective cohort studies suggest that people with high whole grain consumption have less risk for body weight gain compared with low whole grain consumption. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of inclusion of whole grain in the diet on anthropometric measures, particularly abdominal fat regain after a weight loss diet. It is anticipated that the short-term regain of abdominal fat after a weight loss diet is lower in volunteers consuming whole grain than in volunteers consuming refined grain.
