A Study to Examine the Effects of an Experimental Drug on Women With Breast Cancer and Metastatic...

Breast CancerMetastatic Bone Disease

This is a 4-week study to examine the effects of a new experimental medication on women with breast cancer and established bone metastases. This study will enroll approximately 45 women. The primary hypotheses are: (1) odanacatib will result in a substantial suppression of urinary N-telopeptide of type I collagen (u-NTx) similar to that achieved with an intravenous (IV) infusion of zoledronic acid (ZA) over 4 weeks of treatment; and (2) odanacatib (MK-0822) will be safe and well tolerated during 4 weeks of treatment.

Study of Alendronate to Prevent and Treat Osteoporosis in Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Cystic FibrosisOsteoporosis2 more

The primary objective of this study is to determine efficacy of 70 mg alendronate once weekly compared to placebo. This will be measured by percent changes in lumbar spine(LS) bone mineral density(BMD) in adult cystic fibrosis(CF)patients after one year of treatment. The investigators hypothesize that in adult CF patients with osteopenia or osteoporosis, alendronate 70 mg once weekly will produce a mean increase from baseline in lumbar spine BMD that is greater than that observed with placebo at 12 months.

Look AHEAD: Action for Health in Diabetes

DiabetesMyocardial Infarction4 more

The Look AHEAD study is a multi-center, randomized clinical trial to examine the long-term effects of a lifestyle intervention designed to achieve and maintain weight loss. The study will investigate the effects of the intervention on heart attacks, stroke and cardiovascular-related death in individuals with type 2 diabetes who are also overweight or obese.

The Effect of Etelcalcetide on CKD-MBD

Chronic Kidney Disease Mineral and Bone DisorderRenal Osteodystrophy3 more

The proposed study will investigate the effects of etelcalcetide on the bone and blood-vessel health in patients with CKD-MBD. The investigators will test if etelcalcetide makes bone and blood-vessels healthier. The study hypotheses are that are that etelcalcetide keeps bones strong and lowers the risk of calcium deposits in blood vessels. In Aim 1, the investigators will test if 9-months of treatment with etelcalcetide improves bone strength in twenty ESKD patients with hyperparathyroidism (HPT) by bone biopsy. In Aim 2, the investigators will test if 9-months of treatment with etelcalcetide decreases serum propensity to calcify blood vessels. The potential significance of this study is to provide first-time data on the ability of etelcalcetide to protect bone and blood-vessel health in patients with ESKD.

Radius Loading in Primary Hyperparathyroidism

Primary HyperparathyroidismBone Diseases5 more

The purpose of the study is to determine the effect of forearm exercise on forearm bone density in post-menopausal women with or without primary hyperparathyroidism. The investigators hypothesize that forearm exercise will increase forearm bone density in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism more so than in patients without primary hyperparathyroidism.

Etelcalcetide to Treat Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in Hemodialysis Patients With Chronic Kidney...

Secondary Hyperparathyroidism

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of thrice weekly intravenous (IV) administration of etelcalcetide in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in hemodialysis patients with chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD).

Custom Pack in Spine Surgery

Bone DiseasesSpine Cancer1 more

Recent evidence suggests the efficacy of "custom pack" procedure on the operators reduction time and on the contamination risk due to the opening of many sterile packs. Nevertheless ,the studies available are sponsored by the industry and their results are very few. The aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation and reliability of spine surgery "custom pack" efficacy in adult patients obtained in the reduction of surgery time, relative risks, and materials wasted compared with the standard surgical field procedure practice .

MRgFUS Versus EBRT in Patients With Metastatic Non-spinal Bone Disease

Secondary Bone CancerBone Metastases

The objective of this trial is to collect and compare safety and effectiveness data of Magnetic Resonance guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) using the ExAblate 2100 device and radiotherapy in the treatment of metastatic bone tumors. This study is designed as a prospective, double arm, non-randomized study with External Beam radiation therapy (EBRT) serving as control arm. The study hypothesis is that MRgFUS is an effective non-invasive and safe treatment for the palliation of metastatic bone tumors with a low incidence of co-morbidity as compared to EBRT.
