Evaluation of the Prognostic Role of the Systemic Immune Inflammation Index in Postmenopausal Osteoporosis...

This study is a retrospective case-control study. In the study, the data of 304 patients who were evaluated in our clinic between January 2017 and January 2020 with a pre-diagnosis or diagnosis of postmenopausal osteoporosis were retrospectively reviewed. Lumbar 1-4 and femoral neck bone mineral densitometry values T scores, ages, sedimentation, C-reactive protein, neutrophil, leukocyte and platelet levels, and mean platelet volume values of the patients were recorded. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio was calculated by dividing the neutrophil count by the lymphocyte count, and the platelet-lymphocyte ratio was calculated by dividing the platelet count by the lymphocyte count. The systemic immune inflammation index (SII) was calculated using the formula, SII = platelet count x neutrophil count / lymphocyte count. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prognostic value of the systemic immune inflammation index in postmenopausal osteoporosis and to examine the SII, N / L, PLT / L, MPV, sedimentation (ESR), C reactive protein (CRP), femur and lumbar BMD values and their relationships with each other.

Bisphosphonates Effects On Alveolar Bone Among Osteoporotic Women

Osteoporosis is a public health problem. It is a skeletal disease being treated by Bisphosphonates as the first choice medication. The effects of these drugs were investigated for periodontal disease treatment both locally and systemically. However, it is very important to know their indirect effects on alveolar bone (i.e. their effects when used for treating osteoporosis). So, in this study, alternations that involve the alveolar bone when osteoporotic women use bisphosphonates will be studied radiologically using cone-beam CT and digital panoramic radiography. The goal is to provide dentists with information about changes in the characterization of the alveolar bone among these women. This is important for both periodontology and implantology. Maxillary and mandibular bone structural characterization among osteoporotic women had not been studied before. Furthermore, in an opposite direction, dental radiographs may aid in detecting osteoporosis. Osteoporotic women, under bisphosphonates therapy or not, will be invited to participate in this study. In addition, osteopenic and normal women regarding bone fragility will be included too, for comparison purposes. Panoramic radiographs will be taken. In addition, women under bisphosphonates for 6 months or more will be scanned by Cone -beam CT as it can give an idea about bone histomorphometry with a low radiation dose.

Bisphosphonates are drugs that prevent bone loss by blocking the activity of cells that normally resorb bone. The most common examples of these drugs are Boniva and Fosamax. These drugs are available for oral or intravenous dosing and are prescribed at daily, weekly, biweekly, or monthly intervals. Among the many thousands of individuals who currently take these medications, certain individuals experience "atypical" femur fractures preceded by prodromal pain, changes in cortical thickening of bone, or bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ). Osteonecrosis of the jaws is defined as exposed bone of the jaws for 8 weeks or more and requires surgical treatment. This study will attempt to identify genomic and rna biomarkers that may play a role in differential metabolism of bisphosphonates or indicate tendency toward the severe adverse events associated with these drugs.

Because the diabetics are fracturing at a younger age than the general population (12), this leads us to believe there are significant factors that lead to fracture in Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) other than bone mineral density (BMD). Very little longitudinal data exists on BMD in adults with Type 1 DM and the effects of glucose control on BMD. No longitudinal data exists on pQCT in adults with Type 1 DM. Hypothesis: Adult subjects with diabetes and poor glucose control will lose bone mineral density (BMD) as measured by DXA compared to age and sex matched healthy controls.

Three out of four Veterans receive a portion of their care from non-VA providers. On April 9, 2009, President Barack Obama directed the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense to create the Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record (VLER). On August 2010, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki visited Indianapolis, and after visiting with leaders from the VA Health Services Research & Development (HSR&D) Center of Excellence and the Regenstrief Institute, he made the following public comments regarding the latest partnership between the two institutions: "This new technology allows safer, more secure, and private access to electronic health information which, in turn, enhances our ability to continue providing Veterans with the quality care that they have earned." This new technology refers to the VLER HEALTH program that the Indianapolis VA is now implementing in partnership with the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE). This VA-IHIE demonstration project is intended to create the capacity for VA institutions to exchange health information with community partners. Investigators from the VA HSR&D Center on Implementing Evidence-Based Practice are active collaborators in building and implementing this program. The VA-IHIE program provides the bi-directional exchange of health information between VA and non-VA providers. Based on our pilot study of linked VA-IHIE data, investigators are conducting an evaluation of the impact of the VA-IHIE demonstration project upon health care quality and cost of Veterans by taking advantage of the initiation of the implementation as a natural experiment.
