Bone Mineral Density in Women With Major Depression

The purpose of this study is to examine calcium absorption and bone mineral density in women with depression. Research indicates that pre-menopausal women with depression have significantly lower bone mineral density (BMD) than pre-menopausal women without depression. Although the mechanisms of BMD loss are unclear, researchers believe that individuals with depression have impaired calcium absorption. However, it is unknown whether the abnormal absorption is a result of depression or a side effect of the drugs used to treat it. This study will compare calcium absorption in women with depression and in healthy women without depression. Participants in this study will be given two non-radioactive calcium isotopes. One can be taken by mouth and the other must be injected. Participants will have the level of isotopes in their urine measured to estimate true fractional calcium absorption (TFCA). Participants may also have a dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan to measure total body adiposity and lean body mass.

Quality of Life in Postmenopausal Women With Osteoporosis

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis

The researchers will evaluate the effectiveness of a complex intervention composed of multiple actions targeting primary care healthcare workers and postmenopausal women with osteoporosis by means of a quasi-experimental design in the form of a cluster-controlled trial with clustering at family physician level. The study has 2 study arms. In one arm, osteoporosis stakeholders receive a complex intervention (Integrated Osteoporosis Care(IOC)). The second study arm serves as control and receives care as usual. The complex intervention is composed of education and provision of educational material for all stakeholders in primary osteoporosis care (patients, family physicians, nurse-educators, physiotherapists, dietitians, pharmacists and if present patient's informal caregivers) patient self-management support by primary care osteoporosis stakeholders the construction of a primary care osteoporosis treatment guideline and care pathway Effectiveness will be measured by questionnaires and data from the (Electronic Medical Record)EMR and IMA-database, in patients and family physicians. Effects measured in family physicians are: Identification failure rate Percentage of family physicians correctly implementing the osteoporosis treatment guideline Proportion of patients treated correctly as stated in the osteoporosis treatment guideline Proportion of family physicians correctly registering osteoporosis related information in the EMR Intensity of collaborative practices Knowledge of osteoporosis management and treatment Effects measured in patients are: Medication Possession Ratio(MPR) (Primary outcome) Health literacy Self-management efficacy Self-reported treatment adherence Self-reported nutritional intake Intensity of integrated osteoporosis care Patient satisfaction with integrated osteoporosis care HRQoL Functional independence (Activities of Daily Living - ADL) Patient resource use The study elapse time is 18 months. Participating family physicians will receive postgraduate education and start to include patients during consultations in their doctor's office. The inclusion period is 6 months, patients eligible for participation are non-institutionalized postmenopausal women with a diagnosis of osteoporosis who are able to give informed consent. The follow-up period for patients is 12 months. Follow-up period for family physicians is 18 months.

It is the latest point of impairment in the bone,muscle and adipose tissue in older adults. OSO, as the name suggests, is the combination of three syndrome frequently encountered in the elderly: osteopenia/osteoporosis, sarcopenia and obesity. The aims of study are to determine the prevalence of OSO syndrome in community-dwelling adults of Turkey and determine the possible factors regarding risk of falling in this population

Osteoporosis In Non-Celiac Wheat Sensitivity Patients

Non-celiac Wheat Sensitivity

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) or 'wheat sensitivity' (NCWS) is included in the spectrum of gluten-related disorders. No data are available on the prevalence of low bone mass density (BMD) in NCWS. Our study aims to evaluate the prevalence of low BMD in NCWS patients and search for correlations with other clinical characteristics. This prospective observation study will include 90 NCWS patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms, 90 IBS and 90 celiac controls. Patients will be recruited at the Internal Medicine and at the Gastroenterology Units of the University of Palermo. Elimination diet and double-blind placebo controlled (DBPC) wheat challenge proved the NCWS diagnosis. All subjects underwent BMD assessment by Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA), duodenal histology, Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) DQ typing, body mass index (BMI) evaluation and assessment for daily calcium intake.

To determine the magnitude and rate of bone mass deficits following initiation of glucocorticoid therapy for the treatment of pediatric leukemia, rheumatic conditions and nephrotic syndrome, we propose a 6 year, prospective study in 12 academic, tertiary care centres across Canada. The investigators hypothesize that glucocorticoid-treated children with leukemia, rheumatic conditions and nephrotic syndrome will fail to accrue bone mass at a normal rate, and that deficits in mineral accrual will occur in a glucocorticoid dose- and duration-dependent fashion. We also hypothesize that the fracture incidence will increase with concomitant reductions in bone mass.

The purpose of this clinical investigation was to collect clinical evidence of the safety and efficacy of the OsseoScrew System. The OsseoScrew System is intended to provide immobilization and stabilization of spinal segments in skeletally mature patients as an adjunct to fusion. The study was designed to compare the safety and efficacy of OsseoScrew compared to any other commercially available fenestrated pedicle screw system augmented with PMMA for posterior spinal fixation after surgical correction of spinal deformity or pathology.
