Clinical Results of Bisphosphonate and Denosumab Therapy Following Teriparatide Therapy for Japanese...

Osteoporosis

In this study, the investigators would like to analyze the bone mineral density (BMD) , bone turnover makers, and fracture prevention effects of bisphosphonate and denosumab randomly divided following daily teriparatide in Japanese patients under clinical practice. The participants are treated in the investigators hospital, who are under severe osteoporotic condition.

Fracture and Fall Prevention in Elderly With Osteoporosis

OsteoporosisOsteopenia

Osteoporosis is a prevalent health concern among older adults and is associated with an increased risk of falls that can cause fracture, injury or mortality. Identifying the factors related to falls occurring within this population is essential for the development of effective regimes for fall prevention. Studies have shown that muscle quality and good posture alignments are critical for balance control in older adults. People are diagnosed with osteoporosis often combining with muscles weakness, and increased spine kyphosis leading vertebral, fractures and poor balance control, even falls. Therefore, improving muscle quality, strengthening weak muscles and correcting postural alignment are essential elements for fracture and fall prevention in older adults with osteoporosis. The long-term objectives of this work are to prevent fracture and fall in older adults with osteoporosis by improving the function of degenerative muscles using exercise training.

Percutaneous Vertebroplasty Versus Conservative Treatment in GIOPVCF

Osteoporosis

Based on the case reports and other literature, the investigators hypothesize that using PVP for treating GIOPVCF is associated with increased risk of vertebral refractures and does not provide further benefits compared to conservative treatments. The overall objective of this prospective cohort study is to compare the efficacy of PVP and conservative treatment for GIOPVCF. The evaluation of efficacy of therapy includes: 1) the incidence of vertebral refractures; 2) therapeutic effects (pain relief and health-related life quality) and 3) complications. The results from study will be written in English and disseminated widely through scholarly presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and other written communications.

Prevalence of Osteoporosis and Fractures in Patients With Hepatic Cirrhosis and Investigation of...

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a common complication in chronic liver disease, especially in the late stages of the disease. Good nutrition and calcium and vitamin D supplementation are recommended for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. There are no specific guidelines for its pharmacological treatment, but bisphosphonates have been shown to be effective in increasing bone mass in patients with chronic cholestasis, with a good safety profile. There are few studies evaluating the prevalence of osteoporosis in patients with cirrhosis (except for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)). There are no clear recommendations for osteoporosis screening in cirrhotic patients. A diagnosis and early therapeutic intervention before the onset of the complications derived would significantly improve the quality of life and decrease the morbidity and mortality associated with osteoporosis and fractures Objective: -To assess the prevalence of osteoporosis and fragility fractures in patients with liver cirrhosis in our country and the risk factors associated Method: Patients diagnosed with hepatic cirrhosis, other than PBC, will be included in any Child stage during a hospital admission. Epidemiological, demographic, clinical, analytical and imaging data (dorso-lumbar spine radiography, bone densitometry and Trabecular Bone Score) will be evaluated. A descriptive statistic of the main variables will be carried out as well as a multivariate analysis to evaluate the predictive factors of osteoporosis and / or fragility fractures

Role of Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Childhood Bone Development

ObesityCardiovascular Disease2 more

The proposed research brings together complementary expertise to systematically elucidate the longitudinal effects of (1) total and regional body fat and (2) the metabolic impairment that accompanies obesity on bone development during growth. The contribution of this research will be significant because it will provide a solid foundation for understanding the influence of fat (total and regional distribution) on overall bone strength, and whether insulin resistance, beta-cell dysfunction, abnormal lipids, and inflammation could be underpinning factors in the fat-bone strength relationship via effects on bone modeling activity. This knowledge will provide critical information needed to maximize potential therapeutic interventions to counter the linked risks of obesity and osteoporosis, both major public health concerns.

Development of Intervention Model for Osteoporosis and Fall Prevention in Taiwan

Osteoporosis

Department of Chronic Disease and Health Promotion of World Health Organization listed eight classes of chronic disease which will be important globally in the future. And the sixth class is "Chronic Rheumatic Condition", which includes rheumatic arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, spinal disorders and severe limb trauma. Obviously the osteoporosis is a globally important health topic. Osteoporosis draws more and more attention, because osteoporosis has various influences, for example, (1) psychologically impact which occurs frequently in many chronic diseases, such as depression will appear evidently in patients with osteoporosis (2) patients with osteoporosis often lose their social role (3) osteoporosis might induce pain and limitation of body function (4) osteoporosis increases greatly the possibility of fracture. Osteoporosis will induce adverse outcomes, such as the fall of life quality, the increase of morbidity and mortality, as well as the increased abuse of medical service. In this project, the investigators will set up the intervention model for prevention of osteoporosis as well as falls. In this project, the investigators will recruit patients form outpatient services at WanFang Hospital. Through the collection of baseline data from questionnaire and bone density measurement, the investigators can clarify the risk of osteoporosis and falls in studied patients. By using double-blind randomized design, the patients will be collected to either one of intervention and control group. After eight weeks of intervention programs, the investigators will follow on both groups to understand the effect of this program and to increase the bone density of intervention group. The hospital or the Health center might take the outcome to be the reference of taking care the Osteoporosis.

RCT: Added Value of Coordinator for the Management of Hip Fracture Patients

Osteoporosis

Introduction: Hip fracture due to osteoporosis is associated with an extremely high mortality morbidity and loss of quality of life. The risk of future fracture after a first hip fracture is increased. Several studies reported that patients who suffered from a fracture are not optimally treated and do not receive osteoporosis treatment after the first fracture episode. Aim: To evaluate whether a coordinator increases the optimal management of osteoporotic fracture patients and hip fracture patients.
