Dried Plums Prevent Inflammation And Improve Bone Health in Osteopenic Men

The goals of this study are 1) to investigate the extent to which dried plum improves bone health by measuring bone density (a measure of bone strength) of whole body, hip, and forearm, indicators of bone formation and bone breakdown, and 2) to determine the anti-inflammatory effects of dried plum by assessing biomarkers of inflammation. Additionally, relevant medical history and lifestyle variables will be recorded.

Investigation of the Effects of Physical Activity in Women at Risk of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis Risk

The goal of this clinical trial is to investigate the effects of the increase in the physical activity level of women at risk for osteoporosis in the post-menopausal period on the physical fitness, functional fitness age and quality of life. The main question it aims to answer is: • Does the increase in the level of physical activity positively affect the physical fitness parameters (strength, endurance, balance, agility and flexibility), functional fitness ages and quality of life of post-menopausal women with moderate to high osteoporosis risk? Participants in the intervention group were given the Otago Exercise Program, which will last 3 days a week and an average of 30 minutes per day for 12 weeks. The exercises were done one-by-one with a physiotherapist. No program were applied to the participants in the control group, and they were asked to continue their daily living activities in the same way. Researchers will compare two groups to see if there is a difference in effects of Otogo Exercise Program on physical fitness, functional fitness age, and quality of life.

Soluble Corn Fiber Effect on Bone Resorption in Post Menopausal Women

This study is designed to study the dose response effect of continuous Soluble Corn Fiber (SCF) intake over a 50 day period on bone resorption in healthy post menopausal women using the 41Calcium methodology. To further understand the dose response effect of SCF bone biomarkers will be studied. Our hypothesis is that soluble corn fiber will reduce bone resorption in a dose dependent manner in comparison to placebo when estimated by urinary 41Calcium excretion as well as bone biomarkers of resorption.

Osteoporosis and Fall Prevention With Multiple Interventions in the Metropolitan Area

OBJECTIVES To determine the effects of 3 exercise interventions on sarcopenic indices among community-dwelling older adults with high osteoporotic fracture risks. MATERIAL AND METHOD The current study enrolled subjects who screened high risk of fall, osteoporosis/fracture by standardized questionnaires or FRAX. Subjects at the National Taiwan University Hospital Bei-Hu Branch (NTUHBB) were randomized into integrated care group (ICG, target n=50) and muscle training group (MTG, target n=50). Subjects from Lingko Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (LCGMH) were all assigned into X-box group (XBG, target n=30). All participants received a CD-ROM and a one education on osteoporosis, sarcopenia, frailty, fall prevention, nutrition, and coping strategy and another hour of professional led exercise program. ICG subjects received once weekly group exercise while MTG subjects received twice weekly machine-based resistence training on major muscle groups. XBG subjects rececived twice weekly exercise with X-box based programs. Major outcomes were muscle mass (measured by bio-impedance analysis), grip strength, walking speed, and lower leg extension power at baseline and after 12-weeks of intervention.

Dissemination of a Theory-Based Bone Health Program in Online

Bone health is a significant public health issue in the United States. An estimated 10 million Americans age 50 and older are living with osteoporosis, and approximately 50% of women and 25% of men over age 50 will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture in their remaining lifetime. Recent research advancements have produced effective measures to improve and maintain bone health, including exercise, diet, screening tests, pharmacotherapies, and fall prevention strategies. These findings, however, have not been fully incorporated into the daily lives of adults, and many are unaware of the magnitude of bone-health problems. Thus, greater efforts must be made to effectively disseminate evidence-based research findings to improve bone health behaviors of the public. The Internet, with its increasing popularity, can be an effective tool in this endeavor. Despite a great deal of available online health resources, there has been a lack of research investigating effective methods to package and deliver these resources to yield positive public health outcomes. Expanding upon our prior findings and using an innovative approach combining two models of the social cognitive theory (SCT) and the RE-AIM framework (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance), in this proposal, we propose a large scale online study (N = 866) that will compare the long-term impact of two SCT-based online bone health interventions in adults age 50 and older targeting two large online communities. The two interventions are (1) an 8-week SCT-based Online Bone Health (TO-BoneHealth) program and (2) a 12-month TO-BoneHealth Plus program, including the TO-BoneHealth program followed by biweekly theory-based eNewsletters with follow-up of each individual's bone health behaviors ("booster" intervention) for 10 months. The interventions' impact will be assessed on the following the modified RE-AIM framework: (a) Effectiveness (knowledge, selected bone health behaviors, fall incidence, initiation of a discussion about bone health with a primary care provider, eHealth literacy); (b) Reach (number of participants the program reached); (c) Implementation (program usage); and (d) Maintenance (participants' bone health behavior maintenance). With the rapid growth of online communities, findings from this study will significantly contribute to current eHealth practice and research and serve as a dissemination model for other health promotion projects targeting online communities.
