The overall research objectives of the proposed project are to decrease the rate of recidivism, defined as returning to incarceration within three years of release, as well as reduce the number of violent offenses, through the successful implementation of a continuum of services that addresses the unique needs of the TBI population. RHI, in partnership with PCF and IU, will work together to accomplish these goals. To meet study objectives, this randomized controlled trial (RCT) will enroll 102 individuals with TBI who will be randomized into the Reentry Continuum for Brain Injury (RCBI) intervention or a TAU-CG. Participants will be screened for TBI eight months prior to release from PCF. Upon consenting to participate, all subjects will be evaluated before, during, and after the intervention and recidivism data will be collected through IDOC's Data Analysis and Technology Department.

Traumatic Brain Injury

The purpose of the study is to test whether low level electric stimulation, called transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), on the part of the brain (i.e., presupplementary motor area) thought to aid in memory will improve verbal retrieval in military veteran participants with histories of traumatic brain injuries. The primary outcome measures are neuropsychological assessments of verbal retrieval, and the secondary measures are neuropsychological assessments of other cognitive abilities and electroencephalography (EEG) measures. Additionally, the study will examine the degree to which baseline assessments of cognition and concussion history predict responses to treatment over time, both on assessments administered within the intervention period and at follow-up.

A common problem among children with nervous system disorders is difficulty walking on their own. This has impacts beyond mobility including short and long-term health conditions associated with physical inactivity and different developmental experiences as a result of the mobility impairments. A robotic trainer can both provide rehabilitation and be an assistive device to help compensate for difficulties. Figuring out how to prescribe it is critical to improve daily life for children with significant disabilities. Preliminary use of robotic trainers have shown many benefits, such as better head control and improved independence in transfers, which greatly increases ability to live independently. Additionally, vital functions that are frequently impaired in those with less physical activity, such as sleep and bowel habits, seem to improve. Finally, these children enjoy using them. This project aims to determine who is most likely to benefit from training with a robotic trainer and investigate key details about the dose of training that is needed. Families that are already using or hope to use robotic training need this data to help improve their access to the intervention. Clinicians need this systematic approach to building evidence to ensure a future multi-centre randomized control trial is well designed. This study is needed to help improve the lives of those who live with significant disabilities. The objective is to evaluate the feasibility and impacts of delivering robotic gait training at home. Integral in this study is capturing the user perspectives. This will both provide preliminary evidence-based advice to potential users, their families, and clinicians as well as provide key metrics to design a definitive multi-centre randomized control trial. The investigators will provide robotic gait trainers, specifically Trexo robotic gait trainers, to participants and their families to use in their home communities for 12 weeks to evaluate the feasibility and impacts of intensive robotic gait training in people who cannot walk independently. Assessments will be completed throughout the duration of study, including before, during, and after the training intervention, with the goal of evaluating a wide range of feasibility considerations and impacts from robotic training.

The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of comprehensive multimodal individually tailored Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy (CRT), and modifiable lifestyle sessions. The study team hypothesizes that combining evidence-based cognitive and affective therapies with lifestyle modifications is feasible and will improve the community integration (CI) and Quality of life (QoL) in patients with a neurocognitive disorder compared to usual care.

Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Following Traumatic Brain Injury

Individuals with mild traumatic brain injury will be randomly assigned to an active heart rate variability biofeedback condition and a sham condition. The investigators will use a randomized pre-post design that will consist of two data collection phases and a 5-week treatment condition. The heart rate variability biofeedback active condition is designed to increase heart rate oscillations (Osc+ condition) consistent with current best practices, while the sham control heart rate variability biofeedback condition is designed to decrease heart rate oscillations (Osc- condition).

Service members and/or recently separated veterans with post traumatic stress symptoms and mild traumatic brain injury may participate in 8 sessions including 2 sessions including interviews and questionnaires as well as 6 sessions of art therapy. In the art therapy, participants will be provided with a blank paper mache mask template and invited to alter the mask however they wish using a variety of art materials. The therapist will use the art-making process and culminating product to aid in self-reflection, reframe negative thoughts and feelings, and work through traumatic content. Prior to the session start participants will get set up with a mobile qEEG (worn like a hat and backpack). The qEEG will measure brain activity in a non-invasive way throughout the art therapy session to improve understanding of brain activity during the art therapy process.

Acquired brain injury is mental function damage caused by different reasons (such as cerebral neuropathy, head injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, brain tumor, etc.). After the injury, patient has mental, cognitive, behavioral, body function, and other impairments, which makes patient still need the assistance of family members. For patients with brain injury in subacute stage, clinician assesses their needs for follow-up rehabilitation intervention programs in an appropriate way to assist patients who have the potential to return home to make care plans. In the process of rehabilitation, family members support patients, accompany patients to face and cope with changes in physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral aspects, and help patients return to life, which is the key factor for successful rehabilitation. When family members have good coping strategies, they will also have a better mood and quality of life, which will also contribute to the rehabilitation process of patients. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the psychological coping strategies used by family caregivers in the care process and the neuropsychological function of patients. This study is divided into three stages. In the first stage, it is expected to receive 30 groups of patients and their families. Semi-structured in-depth interviews and questionnaires will be conducted for caregivers of family members with brain injury, to explore the psychological adjustment strategies developed by family caregivers in the process of care, and neuropsychological assessment will be conducted for patients to understand the impact of disease on patients' neuropsychological functions, to serve as the direction of neuropsychological intervention. In the second stage, 230 family members of patients are expected to be collected. According to the psychological adjustment strategy framework constructed in phase I, appropriate neuropsychological tests and self-report questionnaires are selected to evaluate the family members of patients, and the scale is compiled. In the third stage, it is expected to collect 60 groups of patients and their families. Through screening tests, the ecological neuropsychological intervention will be carried out for those who have an insufficient psychological function or psychological distress, and the results of neuropsychological function and psychological status before and after the intervention will be tested with evaluation tools. The objective of this study is to provide a specific framework for clinical workers and families of patients with brain injury to face difficulties together and to increase the direction of clinical psychological intervention in the future.
