This study aims to find whether complete decongestive therapy used in breast cancer-related lymphedema has an effect on muscle strength in the affected arm, while assessing the efficacy of the therapy itself. 74 patients with breast cancer related lymphedema were included in this study. Patients were taken their demographic and clinical history and were evaluated with measurements of extremity volumes and hand grip strengths using a hand dynamometer before and after the complete decongestive therapy. Data were then assessed using relevant statistical methods.

Night-time Compression Systems for Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema

Women who have undergone breast cancer surgery may develop swelling of the arm on the side the breast cancer occurred. If the swelling becomes chronic it is called lymphedema. This study will examine night-time compression system garments for lymphedema. Our objective is to determine if breast cancer survivors are willing and able to use the garment overnight to help control their lymphedema. Thirty breast cancer survivors from Alberta will be enrolled in the 24-week long study. Measurements will be taken of each arm to assess the extent of lymphedema and to measure changes over the study period. We will also examine other outcomes such as the impact of the night-time compression system garment on sleep. The study will provide important information on the feasibility of night-time compression system garments as a self-management strategy for lymphedema.

Factors Affecting Functionality in Breast Cancer Survivors

Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer type in women globally. In conjunction with the new developments, breast cancer survival has increased therefore the management of long-term complications has gained importance. Breast cancer survivors can face the loss of muscle strength, increased fatigue and diminished physical function associated with treatment-related long term effects and psychological affection and thereby reduced quality of life. Upper extremity lymphedema or breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is one of the most prominent long term complications which affects breast cancer survivors in many ways after breast cancer surgery. It has been reported that breast cancer survivors with BCRL have the lower muscle strength and more activity limitations when compared to the ones free of BCRL. In BCRL, affected extremity has been found to 36% more weaker when compared to the unaffected side. Fatigue is one of the most prominent symptoms when considering cancer-related symptoms in cancer survivors. It has been stated that increased fatigue is correlated with increased activity limitation and deterioration in physical function. The hand-grip test which is frequently used in the assessment of decreased muscle function has been stated as a reliable and repeatable test in breast cancer survivors. In addition, this test is frequently applicable to assess mortality, physical and functional capacity, symptoms after surgery and to designate an exercise program. There are studies that investigate upper extremity function associated with hang-grip strength in breast cancer survivors. Yet, there is a lack of the objective result or conclusion of the BCRL effect on upper extremity function which is assessed with hang-grip strength when compared without BCRL. Therefore, this study is planned to investigate of cumulative effects of factors such as lymphedema severity, age, fatigue, body mass index, muscle strength, physical activity level, pain level, exercise benefits/barriers scale score on hand-grip strength related upper extremity functionality in breast cancer survivors.

This study aims to examine the effects of lymphedema extremity on upper extremity function, posture and quality of life in patients who develop upper extremity lymphedema after unilateral breast cancer. Twenty-seven volunteers (27Female) diagnosed with upper extremity lymphedema after unilateral breast cancer treatment by a specialist physician between May 2022 and October 2022 were included in the study. Upper extremity circumference measurements of the individuals were performed on the healthy and affected sides. A goniometer measured both sides' upper extremity range of motion (ROM). The New York Posture Analysis (NYPA) was used for posture evaluation. Upper extremity functions were assessed by the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) Questionnaire and the Lymphedema Functionality, Disability and Health Questionnaire (Lymph-ICF). Quality of life was assessed by Upper Extremity Lymphedema-27 (ULL-27) and Quality of Life Measure for Limb Lymphedema -Arm (LYMQOL- Arm).
