RATIONALE: Studying samples of blood in the laboratory from patients with cancer may help doctors learn more about nausea and vomiting caused by cancer treatment. PURPOSE: This laboratory study is looking at blood samples from patients with cancer who were treated on a clinical trial to control nausea and vomiting during donor stem cell transplant.

RATIONALE: Counting the number of circulating cancer cells in samples of blood from patients with metastatic cancer may help doctors find out how much the cancer has spread. PURPOSE: This research study is looking at the number of circulating cancer cells in patients with metastatic breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, or pancreatic cancer.

Two hundred and sixty patients with breast cancer will be accrued into the study. After inclusion in the study, all the patients will be randomized into two arms. Arm 1 will receive Tamoxifen given concurrently with radiotherapy while in Arm 2 radiotherapy will be given followed by tamoxifen sequentially. The patients will be stratified for the following factors: a) BCS (Breast conservative surgery) versus MRM (modified radical mastectomy) and b) central lung distance (CLD) > 2 cm. Patients in both arms will continue tamoxifen for a period of 5 years. The patients will be evaluated by high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) (baseline and at 2 years), serum transforming growth factor (TGF) beta levels (baseline and at 6 months) and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) aerosol clearance half life (baseline and at 6 months).

RATIONALE: Estrogen can promote growth of endocrine sensitive breast cancer cells. Endocrine therapy with tamoxifen citrate may fight breast cancer by blocking the use of estrogen by the tumor cells. Pharmacokinetics and -genomics can have an impact on the efficacy of the treatment. PURPOSE: This phase III trial is studying blood samples to see if the level of active metabolites of tamoxifen can be improved in patients with breast cancer.

RATIONALE: Gathering information over time from women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer may help doctors learn more about mental and physical fatigue caused by treatment. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying fatigue caused by chemotherapy in women who have undergone surgery for stage I, stage II, or stage III breast cancer and in healthy volunteers.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as cyclophosphamide, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays and other types of radiation to kill tumor cells. Specialized radiation therapy that delivers a high dose of radiation directly to the tumor may kill more tumor cells and cause less damage to normal tissue. Poly ICLC may stop the growth of liver cancer by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Giving the drug directly into the arteries around the tumor may kill more tumor cells. Giving cyclophosphamide and radiation therapy together with poly ICLC may be an effective treatment for liver cancer. PURPOSE: This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects of giving cyclophosphamide, radiation therapy, and poly ICLC together and to see how well they work in treating patients with unresectable, recurrent, primary, or metastatic liver cancer.

The randomized LITE study will compare liposomal doxorubin versus standard epirubicin in the treatment of female breast cancer. In order to detect as early as possible post-chemotherapy cardiotoxicity, tissue Doppler imaging parameters elicited at transthoracic echocardiography will be used and will constitute the primary and co-primary end-points.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is greater activity for carboplatin than a taxane standard of care (docetaxel) in women with ER-, PR- and HER2- breast cancer. The trial aims to recruit between 370 and 450 patients.

RATIONALE: Studying samples of blood from patients with cancer in the laboratory may help doctors learn more about changes that occur in DNA and identify biomarkers related to cancer. It may also help doctors predict how patients will respond to treatment. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is evaluating DNA mutations in predicting the effect of external-beam radiation therapy in patients with early breast cancer, localized prostate cancer, or gynecologic cancer.

RATIONALE: Diagnostic procedures that measure biomarker levels in nipple section and blood samples, may help in the early detection of breast cancer. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying nipple secretion samples in detecting breast cancer in patients and healthy participants undergoing breast cancer screening, breast diagnostic studies, or treatment for benign breast disease.
