Adjuvant Radiotherapy on Circulating Cells in Breast Cancer Patients

Breast Cancer

Radiation applied to the preserved breast during radiotherapy treatment activates numerous molecular cascades in tumor bed adjacent cells causing an inflammatory state. During this process, pre-clinical studies demonstrated CD11b + and CD11b+cKit+cells mobilization in the blood. These cells are involved in numerous processes during tumor progression/control and metastases development. The expected results in clinical setting allow us to investigate the development of innovative therapeutic and monitoring strategies. The clinical repercussions would consist in identifying new predictive and prognostic targets in breast cancer.

Preoperative Systemic Therapy vs Upfront Surgery in HER2 Positive Early Breast Cancer

Breast CancerHER21 more

Preoperative systemic treatment can make patients getting more opportunity for breast-conserving surgery, down-staging and new drugs developing. It is particularly common in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-over expressing subtype for as high as 40%~60% pCR rate of such a population. Even though, in NSABP B18/27 trials, it had been proved that PST could not improve either disease-free survival (DFS) or overall survival (OS) comparing with postoperatively systemic treatment in total population. We designed a real-world study to investigate the prognosis of anti-HER2 treatment combined with chemotherapy preoperatively versus postoperatively in HER2-positive early breast cancer

A Pilot Study on Use of Liquid Crystal Contact Thermography to Detect Early Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer

The study was a multicentre, observational, cross-sectional, open and monitored trial involving 274 females who were subject to an examination using liquid crystal contact thermography device as a complementary tool to standard diagnostic imaging procedures of the breast glands. The study was conducted in specialist outpatient clinics. Patients were eligible to participate in the study upon signing the informed consent form. There was no follow up after the thermographic examination. The study will comprise of a single registration of thermographic images of the breasts which will be subjected to automatic and expert analysis by radiologists.

Specialist Recommendation on FBC (Familial Breast Cancer) Chemoprevention Prescribing

Familial Breast Cancer

Some women are more likely to get breast cancer as it runs in their family, they are at risk of familial breast cancer. There are medications, called chemoprevention, which may lower their risk of developing breast cancer by a third. However chemoprevention can also cause serious side effects, like womb cancer and blood clots. This makes decision to start them difficult. Researchers found that not all women who can have these medications are on them. The investigators want to ask familial breast cancer specialists whether they recommend general practitioners (GP) to prescribe chemoprevention, by sending them a short survey. These specialists look after women where breast cancer runs in the family. The specialists assess a women's chance of getting breast cancer and advice those with increased risk what can be done to prevent breast cancer. The investigators will then look at whether specialist recommendation makes a difference to whether GPs prescribe chemoprevention medication. This will be done by linking the specialists' survey response to information on GP prescribing that the government regularly publishes. This may help the investigators understand why chemoprevention is not used as often as it potentially can be.

The Role of suPAR Biomarker in Blood Samples of Breast Cancer Patients During and Post Doxorubicin...

Doxorubicin Adverse ReactionCardiomyopathies2 more

This study looks to find a causative or predictive aspect of the suPAR biomarker for heart failure in breast cancer patients receiving Doxorubicin drug chemo regimen. suPAR is a circulating protein which can be found in blood and/or urine and is associated with both kidney and heart disease. Hypothesis 1: Higher suPAR at baseline will predispose to Doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy or heart failure, observed by histology (under the microscope and other lab techniques) in mouse models, and tested using heart ultrasound techniques in humans. Hypothesis 2: suPAR is a marker of Doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy or heart failure after exposure to Doxorubicin, observed by histology (under the microscope and other lab techniques) in mouse models, and tested in humans. The study will look at suPAR's association with three other biomarkers called troponin, B-Type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) and C- Reactive Protein (CRP) that are also associated with heart disease. In this study, the patient will have blood drawn as a routine part of the cancer treatment. That is prior to starting the cancer therapy, then after the first 2 and last 2 doxorubicin cycles (4 cycles altogether); as well as at 3, 6, & 12 months after doxorubicin treatment. (6 Visits in total) The patient will also have an echocardiogram (echo, heart ultrasound) at each of these time points. The first of the six study echos is considered part of the routine care.
