The Influence and Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Orthopaedic Resident Training

Orthopedic residents, like all other healthcare professionals, face unique challenges during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The rapid spread of COVID-19 has forced healthcare systems around the world to adapt. As in many other specialties, it has led to many changes in the training of orthopedic residents including restructuring of surgical training, a reduction in elective surgery cases, and re-assignment of residents to COVID-19-related clinical duties. As a result, the standard training curriculum has been interrupted and the number of surgical cases has decreased, limiting the ability of the residents to meet the range and number of patient follow-up and treatment requirements set by the Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Education Council (TOTEK). The already stressful work environment of orthopedic residents has become more stressful and anxious with the COVID-19 pandemic. There are no well-designed survey studies that have shown the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on orthopedic resident education and well-being from the resident's perspective. Therefore, the purpose of this nationwide survey study was to document and analyze the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the real-life experiences of orthopedic residents in Turkey.

The purpose of the study is to determine physical and mental health issues of U.S. embryologists related to their occupational characteristics, and how workplace fatigue and burnout may affect their quality of life, cynicism, interactions with patients, attention to detail, and lead to human error, the cause of the most severe IVF incidents that often make headlines and result in costly litigation. It will also correlate how the current manual workflows contribute to these health issues, and what measures can be taken to improve both working conditions and embryologists' health, and, therefore, improve patient care.

Impact of Self-awareness in Medical Students

Objectives: The goal of this study is to understand whether self-knowledge, using the Enneagram, has a long-term impact as a modifying factor of the quality of life, self-compassion and compassion of medical students. Methods: An initial sample of 48 medical students answered, before, immediately after and 9 months after an intervention, an online questionnaire with 6 scales. The intervention group took a self-knowledge and communication course based on the Enneagram. The control group was recruited by matching the sociodemographic variables with the intervention group. The data obtained was subject to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis and qualitative content analysis.

The term burnout was coined by psychologist Herbert Freudenberger in 1974 in an article entitled "Staff Burnout" in which he discussed job dissatisfaction precipitated by work-related stress. A broadly applicable description defines burnout as a state of mental and physical exhaustion related to work or care giving activities. A long-standing conceptual and operational definition characterized burnout as a triad of emotional exhaustion (emotional over extension and exhaustion), depersonalization (negative, callous, and detached responses to others), and reduced personal accomplishment (feelings of competence and achievement in one's work) In the World Health Organization International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision, burnout is defined as a "state of vital exhaustion." Although no specific diagnosis of burnout is mentioned in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, burnout is a clear syndrome with significant consequences. Burnout in health care professionals has gained significant attention over the last several years. Given the intense emotional demands of the work environment, clinicians are particularly susceptible to developing burnout above and beyond usual workplace stress. Residency training, in particular, can cause a significant degree of burnout, leading to interference with individuals' ability to establish rapport, sort through diagnostic dilemmas, and work though complex treatment decision making. Overall, burnout is associated with a variety of negative consequences including depression, risk of medical errors, and negative effects on patient safety. The goal of this review is to provide medical educators and leaders with an overview of the existing factors that contribute to burnout, the impact of burnout, inter specialty variation, and suggestions for interventions to decrease burnout.

The healthcare industry is inherently demanding, stressful, and, at times, emotionally draining. On a typical day, many workers must make rapid and critical decisions, manage numerous demands, team conflicts, and challenging situations with patients and their families. For some health care workers (HCW), the current pandemic - COVID-19 - has also exacerbated these challenges. Providing psychological support is key in alleviating stress among HCWs, yet the situation does not require therapy because HCWs do not principally suffer from a mental disorder. RECHARGE was specifically developed for HCWs and is an abbreviated online version of Problem Management Plus, an evidence-based intervention that helps to cope with stress in times of crisis. As a brief psychological intervention for adults affected by adversity emerging from stress exposure, RECHARGE teaches people three well-documented strategies to manage acute stress (a: managing stress, b: managing worry, c: meaningful activity). It includes psychoeducation, arousal reduction techniques, managing worries and problem-solving skills, behavioral activation, and enhancement of meaningful activities, which are all based on the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of RECHARGE to reduce stress in HCWs and enhance their work performance. Participants in this randomized controlled trial (RCT) study are randomly assigned to either RECHARGE or the active control group. To this end, stress including symptoms of burnout, worries, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and work performance will be measured at baseline, post-intervention, and at a 2 and 6 month follow up.

Reducing Burnout Among Frontline Healthcare Workers During COVID-19

Burnout

Physician burnout has a significant impact on the wellness and productivity of physicians as well as patient health outcomes. Managing burnout among frontline workers is critical to Canada's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to support frontline workers and reduce inefficiencies and medical errors frequently linked to burnout, ultimately improving our ability to detect, treat and manage COVID-19 cases. Therefore, this trial aims to assess the effects of an 8-session intervention over 3 months for burnout in physician residents in residency programs in Canada and the United States of America during the COVID-19 pandemic. This trial will provide evidence to inform health system management and public health response early and effectively so as to maintain the integrity of our workforce during and post-pandemic. The virtual delivery platform renders the proposed intervention easily disseminated internationally, in low- middle- and high- income countries and across urban and rural cities.
