Effect of Glutamine Supplemented Nutrition Support on Protein and Glutamine Metabolism in Burns...

Burns

The Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)received as part of your routine burn care has optimal levels of protein and sugar, however the best mixture of amino acids for a patient with burn wounds is not yet known. Amino acids occur naturally in the body and the food we eat. The body combines amino acids to make protein. It uses the proteins to do things such as heal wounds, fight infection, and provide energy. We are studying if the body's use of protein is increased after receiving TPN containing the amino acid called glutamine. We hope to learn the best composition of TPN so that the body can more efficiently repair wounded tissues and recover earlier from an acute burn injury.

Antioxidant Status During Burn Rehabilitation

Burns

It is believed that children with a prior history of significant burn injury continue to manifest low levels of antioxidants well into their convalescence. The purpose of this study is to examine malondialdehyde (an oxidative lipid marker) and vitamins E, C and beta carotene status in reconstructive burn patients.

Frailty Index and Mortality After a Burn Surgery

BurnsFrailty

Frailty is a condition of a reduced physiological reserve and is associated with postoperative morbidity and mortality. We evaluated the impact of preoperative frailty index (CFI) on 90-day mortality after a burn surgery.

Remote Ischemic Conditioning to Reduce Burn Wound Progression

Burns

Burned skin areas, which were initially vital, can be irreversibly damaged by wound progression. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the feasibility of ischemic conditioning to reduce secondary wound progression.

Nutritional Intakes in Burn Patients Treated as Outpatients

BurnsNutritional Deficiency

Nutrition is a key component of burn care. The primary goal of nutrition is to provide adequate supply in macro and micronutrients that are necessary to maintain organ function but also to wound healing, infection control and muscle preservation. Studies about nutrition and burn care are mainly focused on severe burn patients. There is a few or no data regarding nutrition in minor burns. Those patients rarely receive a multidisciplinary approach, at least in Belgium. The present study aimed to describe the nutritional condition of less severe burn patients treated as outpatients in a Belgian burn center. The ultimate goal was to determine whether this population needs specific dietetics follow-up or not.

Module on Preventing Fire, Burns and Scalds Injury Among Children

Burn Injury

The main aim of this intervention study is to test the hypothesis if school based educational intervention program will significantly improve the knowledge of primary school student on childhood burn prevention in Kuala Lumpur. The secondary aim the evaluate the association of demographics background, burn injury history with knowledge on burn. The study was conducted in 12 primary school in Kuala Lumpur from 1st January 2015 to 31st December 2017 in three different phases.

Predictive Factors, Demographics and Mortality for ARDS in Burn Patients

ARDSHuman2 more

This retrospective study characterizes the clinical course and identifies four independent predictors of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) after burn injury (post-burn ARDS; pbARDS). In addition, a clinically useful prognostic score for pbARDS is introduced (ARDS burn score), which was derived from these independent predictors. The newly developed score may be helpful for the development of specific treatment strategies.

Pediatrician Wellbeing Program

Burn OutBurn Out (Psychology)1 more

The investigators propose to implement a comprehensive Pediatrician Wellbeing Program initiated through and aligning with departmental faculty development and mentorship processes and goals. The Investigators hypothesize that a wellbeing intervention that incorporates an innovative health coaching model to cultivate individual behavior change supportive of one's own and others' wellbeing will lead to improvements in self-reported wellbeing.

AutoMated BUrn Diagnostic System for Healthcare (AMBUSH)

Burns MultipleBurns2 more

The primary objective of this study is to develop a high accuracy and automated system that can provide early assessment of burn injuries with at least 90% accuracy in absence of burn experts, using AI and FDA cleared harmonic ultrasound TDI data based on the analysis of mechanical and hemodynamic properties of the subcutaneous burned tissue. Data collected in this study will lead to the development of better diagnostic tools that could inform clinical burn practices by enabling doctors to determine burn depth and the need for surgery with greater speed and accuracy, resulting in better clinical outcomes.

Massive Burns: Retrospective Analysis of Changes in Outcomes Across 18 Years

Burns

Burns treatment and management has evolved since the 90s, particularly for massive burns (≥ 50% of total body surface area (TBSA)). This study aims at analyzing the impact of the management changes on the length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, the take of skin grafts and the mortality.
