International studies regarding knowledge of CPR among healthcare professionals, mostly nurses, show poor results. The knowledge of CPR among Swedish healthcare professionals is poorly studied. The aim of this study was to describe the theoretical knowledge of CPR and self-assessed abilities of performing CPR among healthcare professionals working in four hospitals in Sweden.

Cardiac ArrestThe aim of this study is to evaluate the prognostic value of the suppression ratio monitored by Bispectral Index for prediction of neurologic outcome after cardiac arrest. All patient admitted to our intensive care unit after a cardiac arrest are included. The results of the suppression ratio will be collected in the 6 first hours of admission. We will evaluate the link between suppression ratio and cerebral performance category score collected at three months.

Arizona Prehospital CPR Quality Improvement Project
Out-of-Hospital Cardiac ArrestThe quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) provided to patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is often suboptimal. There now exist monitors/defibrillators that allow for the measurement and real time feedback of the quality of chest compressions and ventilations. In addition to giving the prehospital provider the benefit of real time CPR quality feedback via voice and visual cues, the CPR quality data acquired using these devices can be utilized as part of an on-going quality assurance/quality improvement program. The first objective of the proposed project is to quantify the quality of chest compressions and ventilations provided in the state of Arizona to patients with OHCA and to determine whether the quality of CPR is related to patient outcome from OHCA. A second objective of this project is to determine whether use of audiovisual feedback improves both CPR quality and patient outcome in the pre-hospital setting.

Measuring the cardiac output in these patients is sometimes important, but difficult, as these patients require an invasive device for measurement. Recently, a non-invasive device based on pulse-contour analysis of the arterial pulse was developed (the Vigileo). Hypothermia changes the pulse contour, so the performance of the Vigileo in patients with induced therapeutic hypothermia is not known. Therefore we conduct this observational study in which the cardiac output of the patients is measured with the traditional method and the Vigileo simultaneously.

Unexplained Cardiac Arrest patients and family members will undergo standardized testing for evidence of primary electrical disease and latent cardiomyopathy along with clinical genetics screening of affected individuals based on an evident or unmasked phenotype.

Heart DiseasesVentricular Arrhythmia5 moreTo evaluate whether T Wave Alternans can predict ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in a prospective epidemiologic natural history study. The prospective epidemiologic pilot study included 550 patients that had left ventricular dysfunction and no history of sustained ventricular arrhythmias. The primary hypothesis tested was whether there was an increased risk of having an arrhythmic event when T Wave Alternans was present in the patient. The secondary aims included comparing risk due to T Wave Alternans between the ischemic patients and non-ischemic patients and assessing whether T Wave Alternans remained an independent predictor of risk upon adjustment for other known risk factors for arrhythmic events such as ejection fraction, ventricular ectopy, NSVT, average NN interval, and RR interval variability. The study approach was a standard epidemiologic surveillance technique. The subject population consisted of individuals with Class I to III heart failure who will underwent a TWA and Holter monitor test and then were followed for up to two years or until arrhythmic events occured.
