Cancer Caregiver Burden: Targeting Emotion Regulation in a Trial

Anxiety Depression

Informal caregivers of cancer patients report high levels of psychological distress as evidenced in markedly increased levels of anxiety and depression. High levels of psychological distress in caregivers have also been found to be associated with poorer health and increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines that are well-established risk factors for physical illness and stress-related mortality. Previous psychological interventions using cognitive methods have only produced small effect sizes and more research on how to effectively alleviate caregiver burden is needed. The proposed project will investigate the effect of Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT) for caregivers of cancer patients. ERT is a novel approach specifically targeting emotion regulation with the aim of improving mental and physical health. The effect of ERT will be examined in a randomized controlled trial comparing ERT to usual medical care (UMC).

Improving Care Through Improv: Promoting Mastery in the Moment

Caregiver Burden

The goals of this clinical trial are to: 1) refine the training program, "Improving Care though Improv;" and 2) test the program for its influence self-perceived caregiving mastery (i.e., how persons assess their ability to provide care) among informal caregivers of persons living with moderate dementia. Forty informal caregivers will be involved in testing the training program. These individuals will be assigned to groups of between 8 to12 caregivers and take part in weekly 2-hour sessions held over a 4-week period. These caregivers will be taught improvisational (improv) theater skills, which involves being in the moment, self-awareness, and responsiveness to others. This group also will be asked to answer surveys questions about themselves and the person receiving care at three timepoints and invited to provide feedback on their training experiences.

Support Via Technology: Living and Learning With Advancing FTD

Caregivers BurnoutFrontotemporal Dementia

Much effort over the last several decades has been devoted to developing and implementing psychoeducational interventions for family caregiving partners for those with Alzheimer's and relatedm dementias (ADRD). However, few interventions address the specific needs of care partners for those with frontotemporal degeneration (FTD). This study tests an intervention to support family caregivers for those with FTD.

Engage Coaching for Latinos

Social IsolationLoneliness1 more

This study asks: "what behavioral strategies are needed to help socially disconnected Hispanic/Latino caregivers with significant barriers to increasing connectedness?" This study uses a mixed methods approach to adapt a brief behavioral intervention-Social Engage psychotherapy-for use with socially disconnected Hispanic/Latino caregivers. This study is a single-arm clinical trial of Social Engage psychotherapy. We propose to enroll 10 participants for up to 8 weekly individual Social Engage psychotherapy sessions, over up to 3 months. Subjects will be aged 40 and older, and be caregivers for a community-dwelling family member with ADRD, living with (or in close proximity to) the family member with dementia, experiencing elevated caregiving distress and social disconnectedness.

Translating a Dementia Caregiver Intervention Into a Mobile Application

DementiaAlzheimer Disease1 more

The overall goal of this development project is to combine elements of two efficacious interventions into a mobile health (mHealth) App for informal dementia caregivers. The investigators will conduct a 3-month feasibility trial of the newly-developed CARE-Well App in 40 dementia caregivers to establish acceptability and feasibility of the intervention, study procedures, and outcome measures.

Mindfulness and Support Group to Improve Patient and Caregiver Burden in Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis

Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis pose a huge financial burden to the health care system. This includes the cost of medical care, employment, disability-related issues and reduced survival. Specifically, the complication of cirrhosis known as hepatic encephalopathy (HE) especially hinders quality of life, the performance of activities of daily living and the ability to drive a motor vehicle in affected subjects. The hidden burden to family members and caregivers of these subjects, however, has been all but ignored to date. Evaluation of family members and caregivers is essential. The burden of caring for someone with liver disease can result in added cost for health care for family members and caregivers and is typically not recognized. The importance of the burden to families and family members or caregivers resulting from other neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's has been well evaluated and specific strategies to educate and counsel family members and caregivers have been elaborated. This is important because as the findings of this study have emerged, we have found that both Veterans and non-Veterans with cirrhosis and HE have a poor quality of life, worse socio-economic status and place a significantly higher burden on their family members or caregivers than those without HE

The Effect of Health Promotion Comprehensive Education Intervention on the Frailty Levels of Elderly...

FrailtyCaregiver Burden1 more

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a comprehensive health promotion educational intervention applied to family caregivers over the age of 60 on their fragility levels. The main question(s) it aims to answer are: Does the educational intervention have a significant impact on caregivers' vulnerability? Does the educational intervention have a significant impact on caregivers' quality of life? The population of the study consists of family members who care for individuals receiving home health services in public hospitals in Antalya city center. G power test was used to determine the number of samples and the result of the analysis on the subject; Alpha value of 0.01 for independent sample t test at 95% confidence level; Taking an effect size of 1.35 and theoretical power of 99%, the minimum total sample size was determined as 58 people, 29 for each group. It was thought that it would be appropriate to take 30% more than the calculated minimum sample number due to possible losses that may occur during the research process, and as a result, it was decided to recruit 40 people for each group. In the study, the Participant Information Form developed by the researcher, the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP) scale, the frailty (FRAIL) scale and the World Health Organization quality of life scale for elderly individuals will be applied to family caregivers. SPSS statistical software package will be used in the analysis of the data obtained.
