Giomer vs Glass Ionomer Cement for ART Occlusoproximal Restorations: a Randomized Clinical Trial...
Dental CariesAlthough the Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) is well settled in the literature regarding occlusal-proximal cavities, the longevity of these restorations is still lower when compared to occlusal ones. This factor is often associated with low mechanical properties of glass ionomer cements (GIC). The objective of this randomized clinical trial is to evaluate the long-term cost-effectiveness of two different materials: an encapsulated GIC - Equia (GC Corp), compared with Giomer (Beautifill Bulk Restorative - Shofu) used as restoratives materials in occlusal-proximal ART restorations of primary molars. Children aged between 4 and 8 years, will be selected in schools in the city of Cerquilho, São Paulo. All restorations will be held following the precepts of the ART and the manufacturer's instructions. The restorations will be evaluated after 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months according to Roeleveld et al. (2006) criteria. To verify the survival of the restorations will be used Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log rank test. To evaluate the association between the clinical variables, Cox regression test will be applied. For the cost analysis will be used analysis of variance. The level of significance for all tests will be considered to 5%.
Clinical Performance of Posterior Composite Tooth Fillings in Adults
Dental CariesDental Restoration FailureThe purpose of this study is to determine whether a new tooth-colored composite material is effective for load-bearing dental fillings.
Efficacy of Hall Technique in Atypical Lesions on Primary Teeth
Dental CariesAtypical carious cavities could be defined as carious lesions in more than 2 surfaces of the same tooth. Dental practitioners have shown difficulties related to material's maintenance in such type of cavities and therefore, several treatment options have been used. However, most of them have shown a great failure percentage. A randomized clinical trial will be developed with the objective of assessing the Hall technique in comparison with the composite resin incremental technique in 364 primary molars' atypical carious lesions of children between 4 and 9 years old. Initially, two previously calibrated examiners will perform caries diagnosis by means of visual assessment and intraoral examination. Selected teeth will be randomly allocated into two groups. Teeth in the first group will be submitted to prefabricated stainless steel crowns treatment (Hall technique); and the other, to composite resin incremental technique, which will be always placed under rubber dam isolation. Lesions' clinical and radiographic follow-up will be conducted after 6 and 12 months. Treatment's efficacy will be assessed by means of four main outcomes: Longevity, marginal adaptation, possible modification in patients' vertical dimension, and caries lesion progression; Patient-focused criteria (satisfaction, discomfort and quality of life impact); cost-efficacy; and Treatment-related parents', children' and operators' perception. Other variables could be further analysed as secondary outcomes, such as techniques performing time among operators, impact of the socio-economic characteristics on restorations' longevity, and restorations' type impact on the antagonist tooth. Comparisons between groups will be addressed using the Kaplan-Meier survival test as well as Long-Rank test. Cox Regression will be used to enable the assessment of other variables' influence in the results. Significance value of 5% will be adopted for all analysis.
Clinical Evaluation of ELS Versus ELS Extra Resin Composite
CariesDentalAdhesive restorative materials are routinely used in operative dentistry to improve tooth tissues with minimal preparation, achieve more esthetic and long term restorations. Despite these efficacy to dentistry these materials still present some drawbacks like polymerization shrinkage. Postoperative sensitivity, marginal discoloration and possibly secondary caries are often associated with loss of marginal integrity in composite restorations occurred as a result of polymerization shrinkage. To achieve optimal long term performance, the requirements will be first to manage polymerization stress buildup following restoration.Low-shrinking composites with new formulas have been successful in brilliantly further developing the leader product els extra low shrinkage. The objective of this controlled clinical trial is to evaluate the clinical performance of restorative material ELS versus ELS Extra resin composite for Class I and Class II cavities that needs to be restored in permanent teeth.
The Survival Rate of Glass Ionomer Cement, Glass Carbomer Cement and Compomer in Occlusal and Proximal...
Caries Involving Multiple Surfaces of ToothDental Caries on Chewing Surface of Tooth1 moreThe null hypothesis of this study is that GCC, GIC and compomer have the same survival rate when used for the treatment of occlusal and proximal caries in primary molars with ART under field conditions. This research will be done under field conditions in Barueri, a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 600 patients will be selected. After 1, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months the restorations and teeth will be evaluated by two independent evaluators. Only children whose parent or representative who have signed an informed consent are included in this research. The ART treatments will be done by two dental students. The operators will receive the same ART-training. The children will be randomly assigned to one of the operators. The restorative material to be used in each child will be assigned by another random list. It will be performed descriptive analyses to describe the sample. Bivariate analyses will be performed to test the hypothesis. The data will be analyzed with a chi-square test to compare the survival rates of GIC and GCC. Some co-variables will be evaluated, such as: operator effect, the influence of the cavity size on the survival rate, the position of the tooth, the dentists preferred side, the child's dmft/DMFT, contamination and finally the preoperative conditions. The effect of these variables on the survival rate will be evaluated using a regression analysis.
Effectiveness of Modified Class IV Atraumatic Restorative Treatment
Dental CariesAtraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) has become an accepted dental restoration treatment in many developing countries. Because, ART is intended to be operated in molars, and about 10% of all carious lesion by an age of 18 years appear in anterior teeth in Gambia, it was the aim of this study to clinically evaluate a modified ART restoration technique for anterior teeth as the traditional treatment approach did not show satisfying clinical results.
Dental Fluorosis Risk by the Use of Acidulated Fluoride Dentifrice
CariesDental2 moreThis research aimed to evaluate the risk of dental fluorosis by using an experimental fluoridated acidulated dentifrice compared to conventional dentifrices in two-to-four-year-old children residing in a non fluoridated area by the concentration of fluoride incorporated in childrens' nails, as well as the incorporation of F into the biofilm. Two hundred and ten children participated on this study. They were randomly allocated into three groups differing according to the type of dentifrice used over 12 months: G1:1100 ppm F, pH 4.5; G2:750 ppm F, pH 4.5; G3:1100 ppm F, pH 7.0. The dentifrice was placed on the toothbrush using the "drop" technique. The toenails of the biggest toe were collected in three moments, corresponding to the experimental period of use of the dentifrices (T1, T2 and T3), as well as the biofilm which was collected twice, 5 and 60 minutes after brushing. The nails and biofilm fluoride concentration were analyzed on a specific electrode using the HMDS diffusion facilitated technique.

Clinical Performance of Two Bulk-Fill Composite of Posterior Restorations
Post Dental RestorationCaries1 moreTo minimize the effects of polymerization shrinkage in the restorative treatment, there are new composites called Bulk- Fill which the companies has developed this composites for example Tetric N Ceram(Ivoclar-Vivadent) and Filtek ( 3M ESPE). Its decreased polymerization shrinkage and properties allow the material to be inserted in one layer being quickly than traditional composite. This clinical study is designed to compare the clinical performance of the bulk fill composite resin in Class I (one-surface posterior), II (two-surface posterior) and V (cervical-surface posterior) fillings.
Evaluation Of Fluoride Uptake By Dentine Following Silver Diamine Fluoride Under Resin Modified...
Dental CariesDental caries is one of the most common oral diseases of childhood and is considered as a major public health problem especially in areas with poor access to dental care. In a recent cross sectional study carried out in Egypt on 1000 child aged from 3-6 years, it was found that 61.4% of these children had dental caries. In order to avoid serious complications of untreated dental caries such as pain, infections, emergency visits and possibly hospitalization , an effective low cost treatment should be identified particularly in areas with poor dental access. Studies have proven that silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a topical fluoride that has the ability to effectively arrest and prevent dental caries.
