Prevention of Adult Caries Study (PACS)
CariesDentalAdult tooth decay is an infectious disease that afflicts the majority of Americans aged 55 and older and is the most common chronic disease at midlife with an ever growing economic toll. Despite the fact that specific bacteria cause tooth decay, no FDA-approved anti-microbial treatment for decay is available to the American dental professional. The Prevention of Adult Caries Study (PACS) is a study designed to evaluate the efficacy of a topical, temporary, 10% w/v chlorhexidine dental coating in reducing new decay in adult dental patients at risk for decay.
Prevention Management Model for Early Childhood Caries (MAYA Project)
Dental CariesThe purpose of this study is to determine whether dental disease patterns and transmissable bacteria that are known to cause a severe form of dental decay in young children can be reduced or eliminated by treating mothers and their young infants early on with Chlorhexidine and fluoride varnish applications, respectively as part of a comprehensive Prevention Management Model.
Fluoride Varnish Randomized Clinical Trial
Dental CariesThe purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of fluoride varnish (FV) applied once or twice a year with counseling to counseling alone in preventing early childhood caries (ECC) (tooth decay in children under the age of five).
Effect of pH and Fluoride Concentration of Dentifrices on Caries Control
Dental FluorosisDental CariesThis study aims to assess the overall effect of pH and fluoride concentration of liquid dentifrices in the control of children dental caries of a fluoridated area, through visual inspection and the quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) method. Toenail F concentration of a subsample of the children enrolled will be evaluated, in order to assess F bioavailability from these formulations and the evaluation of the concentration of fluoride incorporated into the biofilm will be done 6 months after initiation of the dentifrices use.
Randomized Clinical Trial of Occlusal Sealant
Dental CariesThis study assessed long-term impact of tooth Eruption Stages (ES) on sealant retention on occlusal surfaces previously coated with intermediary bonding layer and it determined caries incidence outcome evolved. The treatment were (sealant/technique): Fluroshield; Helioseal Clear Chroma; Single Bond and Fluroshield; Excite and Helioseal Clear Chroma.
Cost Effectiveness of Sodium Fluoride Varnish in Prevention of Dental Caries in School Children...
Dental Caries in ChildrenFluoride varnish application is universally accepted as a dental caries prevention method. This study was aimed in assessment of clinical outcome and cost effectiveness in using that method in Sri Lankan school children
Decision Aids for the Management of Suspicious Occlusal Caries Lesions
Dental CariesThe study will determine whether clinicians who use a diagnostic device treat suspicious occlusal carious lesions (SOCL) surgically more often, with the same frequency, or less frequently, than dentists not relying on a diagnostic device. The study will also determine -- among those SOCLs that are opened -- whether the proportion of lesions that extend into the dentin when dentists are using a diagnostic device is more than, the same, or less than when no device is used.
The Microbiology of Caries Resistance
Dental CariesThe purpose of this research study is to investigate the bacterial composition of plaque and saliva located in the mouth and associate that with risk factors that cause cavities.
ETT Rotation During Nasal Fiberoptic Intubation
Dental CariesA nasal endotracheal tube (ETT) is routinely placed in children and a fiberoptic scope (FOS) is commonly used for this purpose. Resistance to the passage of ETT is frequently encountered as it is advanced over the FOS for placement into the trachea, since it gets hung up on structures of the laryngeal inlet. The aim of the investigators study performed on forty children divided in two groups was to study in the pediatric population, whether a 90° counterclockwise rotation (CCR) of the ETT prior to advancing through the larynx, by nasal approach, prevents it from getting hung up at the laryngeal inlet.
Fluoride Varnish For Childsmile Nursery School Attenders
Dental CariesThe study will compare the effectiveness of Duraphat® fluoride varnish in preventing any further dental decay among 3-4 year old children in nursery schools. It is important to ascertain the additional preventive value that fluoride varnish may provide when applied in conjunction with other preventive measures which form part of a national dental health improvement programme targeting children at risk from dental decay. 1600 children will be recruited into the study for 2 years.
