Comparison of Conventional Versus Conservative Caries Removal in Primary Teeth
Dental Caries Extending Into DentinThe sample will be, at least, 90 primary molars, randomly distributed into three groups: Group 1: IPC; Group 2: SE; Group 3: SCR. Teeth must present deep caries lesions (at least 2/3 of dentin depth), pulp vitality (no clinical or radiographical signs of pulp disease, such as abcesses, fistulae, root resorption, abnormal tooth mobility). This study received approval by the Ethics Committee of Fluminense Federal University (UFF; Brazil) - # CAAE: 58812816.8.0000.5626. The study started in January, 2017; and will finish in December, 2020. Patients will be selected from the public schools in Nova Friburgo. The dental exams and treatment procedures will be done at the clinics from the School of Dentistry, Health Institute of Nova Friburgo (ISNF). Laboratory proceedings will be done at: Clinical and Microbiological Research Laboratory (LAB PECMA - ISNF) - Sample storage, bacterial cultivation and identification. The methods and the systems used for the detection of secondary caries lesions have presented low validity. Also, the consequent treatment decisions of this kind of lesions have presented a lot of variation. However, the correct diagnosis of secondary caries may guarantee greater longevity to the restorative treatment, as well as oral health to the patients, reducing the cost and clinical time of the dentists. Therefore, the investigators aimed to perform this study to evaluate and compare two visual criteria for the evaluation of restorations in primary teeth in medium and long term outcomes for the patients, through a randomized clinical study. These criteria are the system proposed by the World Dental Federation (FDI) and the International Caries Classification and Management System - ICCMS.
Indirect Pulp Capping With Biodentine and TheraCal LC in Permanent Mature Molars
Deep Carious LesionsReversible Pulpitis1 moreManagement of deep carious lesions in permanent mature molars with reversible pulpitis represents a challenge for clinicians. Vital pulp therapy includes indirect and direct pulp capping, partial pulpotomy and full pulpotomy. Indirect pulp capping is a procedure in which a material is placed on a thin layer of remaining soft dentin that, if removed, might expose the pulp. The objective is dentin bridge formation and pulp vitality preservation. The aim of this randomized clinical trial is to evaluate the success rate of indirect pulp capping with Biodentine and TheraCal LC in mature permanent molars with deep carious lesions at one-year follow-up examination. The null hypothesis tested will be that there is no statistically significant difference in success rate between both materials in indirect pulp capping of permanent mature molars with deep carious lesions.

Color Stability of NeoMTA Pulpotomized Primary Teeth
Dental Caries Extending to PulpThis randomized control study will use 15 pediatric subjects selected from the patient population in the pediatric dental clinic at Children's Medical Center Dental Clinic (CMC Dental Clinic). The study will use a within-subject control design whereby one tooth will be treated with a pulpotomy using the new formulation of MTA (NeoMTA Plus, Avalon Biomed Inc., Bradenton, FL, USA) and restored with a multi-surface composite, and the other tooth with a formocresol pulpotomy and restored with a multi-surface composite; thus, approximately 15 teeth will be treated for each treatment group. The specific treated tooth will be randomized as to which side will receive the MTA or formocresol using sealed, opaque envelopes. Approximately 15 subjects will be needed for the study in order to elicit any significant findings as demonstrated by a power analysis.
