Sampling Biomarkers in Meniscus Injury to the Knee

The diagnosis of clinically-significant meniscal tears of the knee remains challenging, and it is unknown why only some injuries become painful. The limitations of diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging result in arthroscopy that is not always beneficial. Elucidation of biochemical pathways underlying pain in this condition may aid patient selection for surgery and provide pharmacotherapeutic targets. Cytokines may be involved in pain following meniscus injury and diagnostic cytokine assay may help physicians differentiate patients that may benefit from arthroscopy from those that may not.

Comparison of BioCartilage Versus Marrow Stimulating Procedure for Cartilage Defects of the Knee...

Defect of Articular Cartilage

Subjects will be selected among the investigators' patient population who are already scheduled to receive a marrow stimulating procedure (MSP), with or without the addition of BioCartilage. During the surgical operation for MSP, a portion of the patient's blood is taken out and used to form a patch to cover a cartilage defect of the knee. Currently it is considered standard of care to either form the patch using only a portion of the patient's blood, or form the patch using a portion of the patient's blood combined with an FDA-approved augmentation such as BioCartilage. This study will collect outcomes data and MRI for patients that are undergoing MSP with and without BioCartilage augmentation, then compare the data between those who received BioCartilage and those who did not. The primary endpoint is to determine whether subjects receiving a marrow stimulating procedure (MSP) augmented with BioCartilage have improved outcomes (measured using quality of life indicators, functional outcomes, and MRI) compared to subjects who receive MSP without the use of BioCartilage.

Objective: To compare the temporal muscle activation between females with PF OA and normal controls during stair ascent. Methods: An observational comparative study was conducted with thirty-one females with PF OA and 11 healthy ones. The onset times of multifidus, transversus abdominus (TrA), gluteus medius (GM), and vasti muscles were measured by quantitative Electromyography during stair ascent task. hypothesis: Investigators hypothesized that there won't be a significant difference between females with PF OA and their matched healthy group regarding the onset times of vastus medialis obliqus (VMO), vastus lateralis (VL), gluteus medius (GM), multifidus, and transversus abdominus (TrA), during stair ascent task.

Objective: to investigate whether females with PF OA descend stairs with different muscular recruitment strategies contrasted with similar aged healthy females. Methods: An observational comparative study will be conducted with thirty females with PF OA and 10 healthy ones. The onset times and electromyography (EMG) duration of multifidus, transversus abdominus (TrA), gluteus medius (GM), and vasti muscles will be measured by quantitative EMG during stair descent task. hypothesis: Investigators hypothesize that there won't be a significant difference between females with PF OA and their matched healthy group regarding the onset times and duration of vastus medialis obliqus (VMO), vastus lateralis (VL), gluteus medius (GM), multifidus, and transversus abdominus (TrA), during stair descent task.

Molecular Biomarkers Associated With Degenerative Joint Disease in the Knee

This investigation describes a novel complex of structural degradation proteins that is associated with pain in individuals with meniscal pathology undergoing arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. The presence of the complex in the synovial fluid of the knee is sensitive and specific for the painful state compared with similar aged controls. The absence of the complex in asymptomatic controls makes it a useful biomarker for the disease state.
