MEOPA to Improve Physical Therapy Results After Multilevel Surgery

Children with cerebral palsy commonly undergo "multilevel surgery", meaning several lower limb combined procedures performed during the same surgical intervention. The aim of this type of surgery is to correct all deformities together in order to restore near to normal anatomy and muscular function. It is very important to be able to obtain good range of motion after surgery, in order to consolidate surgical results. During the first days after the operation, children are sore and it may be difficult to realize adequate physical therapy. In order to palliate this situation, MEOPA gaz is used during REHAB sessions. Good results have been obtained so far but no study is available to demonstrate these results. The goal of our research is to prove that there is a benefit in using MEOPA postoperatively in these patients.

Optimizing Assisted Communication Devices for Children With Motor Impairments Using a Model of Information...

For children who depend on devices to communicate, the rate of communication is a primary determinant of success. For children with motor impairments, the rate of communication may be limited by inability to contact buttons or cells rapidly or accurately. It is therefore essential to know how to adjust the device interface in order to maximize each child's rate of communication. The optimal rate of communication is determined by the Channel Capacity, which is the maximum value of the Information Rate for all possible keyboard button or cell layouts for the communication device. We construct a mathematical model for the information rate based on the relationship between movement time and the number of buttons per screen, the size of the buttons, and the length of a sequence of buttons that must be pressed to communicate each word in the vocabulary. We measure the parameters of the model using a custom-programmed touch-screen interface.

Cycle to Fun - 'Exergames' for Inpatient Rehabilitation for Children/Youth With CP

This study is designed to evaluate the feasibility and primary responses of a 3-week exergaming cycling program called Liberi Exergames for pediatric inpatients with cerebral palsy who are recovering from orthopedic surgery. This study involves the use of multiplayer exercise video games or 'exergames' that incorporate an avatar powered by pedalling a recumbent stationary bicycle. The Liberi suite of exergames contains six mini-games, including a combination of cooperative games, competitive games and individual games designed to be fast-paced, action-oriented, and enjoyable for youth with special needs. Standardized questionnaires and assessments investigating post-operative pain, gross motor function, quality of life, and study engagement are also administered. Five participants will engage in 'exergaming' sessions every weekday for 3 weeks, and five participants will only complete the assessments and questionnaires. All participants will receive the standard of care physiotherapy.

Introduction: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive disorder in the brain which makes the control and execution of movements difficult. One of the possible ways to analyze motor control in these individuals could be through analysis of movement speed and accuracy. Objective: To verify the speed-accuracy trade-off in individuals with CP. Method: 96 individuals were evaluated, 48 with CP and 48 with typical development (TD), matched by age and sex. The software used was the "Fitts' Reciprocal Aiming Task v.1.0 (Horizontal)", performed on a computer using an external optical mouse, with progressive indices of difficulty (IDs): ID2, ID4a and ID4b. Each index of difficulty was performed three times and the total time/touches captured.

Associated Disorders of Locomotion and Postural Control of Axial Segments in Cerebral Palsy

Gait abnormalities, which occur in Cerebral Palsy (CP), are characterized usually by a toe-to-floor or a plantar-to-floor initial contact (equinus gait), followed by an early braking of the tibia's forward progression (during ankle dorsiflexion). This causes consequently a trunk deceleration. Moreover, children with CP have difficulties to stabilize the trunk and the head in the space, and that could have impact on gait. If equinus gait is often attributed to the triceps surae spasticity, recent works suggest rather that this early braking of the dorsiflexion could be a motor adaptation to axial postural control difficulties. This thesis project aims firstly to attest that locomotor disorders are related to these difficulties in the stabilization of the axial body segments in children with CP and, secondly, to show that improving the trunk and head postural control with a specific rehabilitation protocol could reduce the early braking of the dorsiflexion and, consequently, the gait abnormalities observed in CP.
