Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Program
Body Weight ChangesThis study is proposed on behalf of the Hartford Childhood Wellness Alliance, a 107 member, 35 group organization whose goal is to improve the health of children in Hartford, CT. In a randomized control trial, the primary aim of this study is to test the initial efficacy of a program of enhanced home visitation with neighborhood and community support to change maternal behaviors related to infant nutrition (sweetened beverage/juice consumption, breastfeeding and introduction of solids), parenting skills (establishing routines around sleep, reading cues for hunger, satiety, television time) and family wellness (improving the home food environment, enhancing physical activity). The investigators hypothesize that at 12 months of age, infants in the intervention arm will drink less sugar sweetened beverages/juices, will have ingested solids at an older age, will have been breastfed longer and more exclusively than infants in the control arm and will have less TV viewing, more established sleep routines and greater soothability (primary outcomes).
Effect of Television Viewing and Exercise on Appetite, Satiety, and Food Intake in Children
Childhood ObesityThe purpose of this study was to describe the effect of 30 min TV viewing with or without simultaneous moderate exercise using a treadmill on subsequent subjective appetite, satiation, and food intake in normal weight 9 to 14 year old children. It is hypothesized that TV viewing during exercise immediately before mealtime affects food intake regulation through its effect on the control of appetite and satiation.
Project Fun: Parents And Youth Together
Childhood ObesityThe proposed study is a continuation of a randomized, controlled pilot effectiveness trial conducted in schools wherein the feasibility and completion of the trial by parents and children will now additionally be examined in after school and YMCA connected programs. The intervention for this study is Project FUN and Project FUN with Parents. Project FUN is an 8 module online program for children in 4th through 8th grade. Project FUN with Parents is a 6 module online program for their parent. Children and parents will be recruited through the afterschool and YMCA connected programs. Those agreeing to participate will be randomly assigned to a first intervention or second intervention session (waiting list control group). Surveys and measures will be collected for everyone pre-intervention, after the first session completion and after the second session completion to create a waiting list control group. Hypothesis 1: Body composition and dietary fat of children who complete Project FUN and have a parent complete Project FUN with Parents will be lower on completion than children who only complete instruments. Hypothesis 2: Fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity and fitness of children who complete Project FUN and have a parent complete Project FUN with Parents will be greater on completion than children who only complete instruments.
Alberta Project Promoting Active Living and Healthy Eating in Schools
Childhood ObesityThe objectives were to 1) make students eat healthier and be more active; and 2) prevent overweight and obesity. Children will therefore be less likely overweight or obese. Beginning in January 2008, the Alberta Project Promoting active Living and healthy Eating in Schools (APPLE Schools) was implemented in 10 schools throughout the Canadian Province, Alberta. Full-time School Health Facilitators were placed in each of the schools to implement what is know in Canada as Comprehensive School Health (CSH). In the United States, CSH is more commonly referred to as "Coordinated School Health", while the synonymous term "Health Promoting Schools" is often used in Australia and Europe. The project was evaluated annually in the spring from 2008 to 2011 and as of 2009 evaluations included the use of time-stamped pedometers. The comparison group included approximately 150 schools that were randomly selected to reflect the population of Alberta, Canada. Twenty of these randomly selected schools also participated in data collection which involved the use of time-stamped pedometers.
A Study of the Effects of Exercise Intensity on Insulin Sensitivity in Overweight Youth
Type 2 Diabetes MellitusAdolescent ObesityBackground: The investigators know that exercise helps children develop strong bones and muscles and generally stay healthy. What is unclear however, is how much exercise a child needs to lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Objective: The investigators will try to find out whether high-intensity exercise for a short-period of time is better than moderately intense exercise for improving the diabetes risk profile in teens who are at risk for type 2 diabetes. The working hypothesis is that exercise-mediated improvements in insulin sensitivity (a risk factor for diabetes) will be greater following vigorous intermittent physical activity than following low intensity physical activity in overweight adolescents 13-18 yrs at risk for T2DM. Brief Description of Research Project: Teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 yrs, who are at risk for type 2 diabetes (either by their family history or an abnormal response to sugar) will be randomly assigned to one of two activity groups or a control group. The activity groups will have supervised exercise sessions 3 to 5 days per week for 6 months. One group will do high-intensity exercise, and the other will do lower-intensity exercise. We will measure how sensitive their body is to insulin and the amount of fat in their muscle and liver tissue at the beginning and end of the exercise intervention.
Studying the Impact of Product Packaging in a Virtual Store Environment
ObesityChildhoodPurpose: Examine the impact of nutrition claims on parents' decisions to purchase fruit drinks in a randomized controlled trial in an online virtual convenience store (task 1) and examine the impact of added sugar warnings on parents' snack purchasing decisions in a randomized controlled trial in an online virtual convenience store. Participants: Participants will consist of approximately 2,500 individuals 18 and older with at least one child ages 1-5. The child 1-5 who had their birthday most recently must have consumed at least one fruit drink in the previous week. Additionally, they will live in the United States and identify as non-Hispanic black, non-Hispanic white, or Hispanic. The panel research company Kantar will recruit individuals from its pool of potential individuals. Procedures (methods): The investigators will randomize participants to one of 12 versions of a virtual convenience store (iShoppe) and then the participants will complete two shopping tasks in the store. They will select two beverages (task 1) for their child 1-5 who had their birthday most recently, and they will select a snack (task 2) for that same child. After completing the shopping tasks, the participant will complete a survey in Qualtrics. The survey will ask a series of questions about the beverages and snacks (e.g., perceived healthfulness, perceived appeal, intentions to consume products). Questions will also include standard demographic and health related variables.
Effectiveness of an IMB-based Intervention for Reducing Sweetened Beverages Consumption in Preschool...
Childhood ObesitySugar-sweetened beverages and over consumption of 100% fruit juice add unneeded calories to the diets of children, potentially leading to overweight. As children's diets are extensions of their parent's behaviors, the investigators propose to implement a nutrition education intervention based on the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) behavior change model using parents as the primary agent of change. This project will evaluate an intervention to reduce sugar-sweetened beverages in preschool children from low-resource families. The proposed research uses a randomized control group design involving 20 parents of 3-5-year-old children at 20 sites (n=400) over 3 years. The investigators will randomly assign sites to two experimental conditions: 1) 10-week sugar-sweetened beverage intervention and 2) 10-week sham education control. Data collection for the two groups will be conducted at baseline and 1 weeks and 6 months post intervention. Measures to be collected include and IMB survey, home beverage inventory (HBI), weekend food recall, and anthropometrics. Education programs will be available to all parents at sites through interactive display boards with 5-10-minute lessons. Each semester 8 students (n=32) will enroll in an experiential course aimed at increasing students' cultural competency. For 10 weeks, students will attend classroom training and spend 2 hours twice a week at sites implementing the nutrition education program.
Obesity Prevention in Head Start
Childhood ObesityFamily style dining is a widely-advocated approach by which to feed children in early education settings. While family-style dining is hypothesized to allow children to attend to their hunger and satiety and consume only the amount of food they need to meet their energy needs, children's ability to self-regulate eating in this setting is dependent on a number of factors including early life experiences, the feeding strategies caregivers use during meals, and the eating environment. The goal of this study is to develop and implement a novel curriculum for childcare providers, Mealtime Matters, that addresses the factors that interfere with children's self-regulation of eating and offers caregivers strategies to reduce exposures that promote over-eating in the early education environment. Mealtime Matters will be pilot tested through a randomized controlled trial design with 7 Head Start classrooms, enrolling approximately 72 low-income preschool-aged children. Intervention feasibility and acceptability will be examined, as well as changes in caregiver/child mealtime interactions and children's dietary intake during meals at Head Start. Study results will inform the development of a fully-scaled efficacy trial.
Family Empowerment for Enhanced Development
