The Ability of Pecan Consumption to Improve Vascular Function and Reduce Chronic Disease Risk in...
AgingBackground: To date, there are no published studies on the effects of pecans on vascular function following a high-fat meal. Purpose: To examine the impact of daily pecan consumption for a 4-week period on vascular health and other markers of cardiovascular disease risk in aging adults.

Promoting Physical Activity in Churchgoing Latinas
Chronic DiseaseThe low prevalence of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) among adult Latinas likely contributes to the high rates of cancer and other chronic diseases in this population. The goals of the current study, based largely upon the core principles of the Social Ecological Model, are to design, implement, and evaluate an innovative multi-level intervention promoting physical activity among churchgoing Latinas. The evidenced-based intervention targets three "tiers" of environmental influences (i.e., church, immediate neighborhood surrounding the church, and community) on activity, as well as MVPA-related personal factors (i.e.., interpersonal, cultural, and perceived environmental variables). The physical activity intervention will be compared with an attention-control condition providing health education on cancer screening and prevention. Sixteen churches will be randomly assigned to either the physical activity intervention or the attention-control condition. The primary aim of the study is to determine whether a multi-level intervention will increase MVPA among Latina churchgoers in the intervention condition relative to the attention-control condition.
Intradermal Trivalent Influenza Vaccine With Imiquimod
Chronic IllnessDespite the WHO International Health Regulations Emergency Committee declared an end to the 2009 H1N1 pandemic globally, the emergence of the novel 2009 H1N1 virus in March 2009 has affected more than 214 countries with at least 18000 deaths [1]. Patients with chronic underlying illness and extreme of ages are at risk of developing severe disease and complications [2-3]. Resistance to oseltamivir has also been reported [4]. Therefore, vaccination with the 2010/2011 trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) with the 2009 H1N1-like virus incorporated will be the best protection against the influenza infection, especially among the at risk population. Recent study on dose sparing seasonal influenza vaccine delivered via a novel intradermal microneedle has demonstrated good immunogenic responses similar to full-dose intramuscular vaccination [6]. Poor immunogenicity of the H1N1 2009 component of the trivalent influenza has been reported [7]. Study has also suggested the combined intradermal vaccination with local stimulation of dermal antigen presenting cells by applying imiquimod cream (Aldara) to the injection site, which activate antigen presenting cells (APC) through the toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) may produce better immunogenicity [8]. Imiquimod cream is currently registered for the treatment of warts and basal cell carcinoma. Scientific evidence has demonstrated that after treatment with imiquimod, the antigen is processed and presented to cells of the adaptive immune system leading to clearance of the virus and subsequent clearance of the lesions [9]. In addition to functional maturation, imiquimod induces migration of dendritic cells from the dermis to draining lymph nodes [10,11]. Subcutaneous administration of imiquimod as vaccine adjuvant simultaneously with the antigen of interest, has shown to induce enhanced responses towards the administered antigen [12]. We therefore performed a prospective, double blind, randomized controlled study to compare the safety and immunogenicity between intradermal 2011/2012 TIV immunization with pretreatment of imiquimod cream and conventional full dose intramuscular 2011/2012 TIV immunization with pretreatment of aqueous cream as control.
Internet Chronic Disease Self-Management Program for Australia
Chronic DiseaseThe Internet Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (ICDSMP) is a pilot study of our existing, previous approved, Chronic Disease Self-Management Program Online. The online programme will be offered to 300 people with chronic disease in South Australia and evaluated for effectiveness, as well as satisfaction of both the South Australian peer facilitators and the participants with chronic disease. All participants will be recruited by the State of South Australia, after which they will complete informed consent and a questionnaire on a secure website housed at Stanford. They will take a 6-week online self-management program in groups of 20-25, and they fill our additional online questionnaires at 6 month and one year.
Immunogenicity and Safety of an Adjuvanted Inactivated Subunit Influenza Vaccine to Those of a Non-adjuvanted...
Influenza DiseaseThis phase III is designed to confirm the previous trial results evaluating the safety, clinical tolerability and immunogenicity of the 2006-2007 formulation of Novartis Vaccines' adjuvanted influenza vaccine and subunit influenza vaccine in adults with underlying chronic diseases.
Effects of Anti-IgE Antibody Omalizumab on Patients With Chronic Sinusitis
Chronic SinusitisWe propose to study the effects of Xolair on patients with chronic sinusitis with or without nasal polyps. Because of the similarities between the inflammatory processes found in asthmas and rhinitis to those found in chronic sinusitis, we hypothesize that sinusitis should respond to Xolair, just as asthma.
Childhood Chronic Illness: An Educational Program for Parents of Children With On-Going Health Care...
Chronic IllnessThe long-term goal of this research is to strengthen parents' abilities to manage the complexities of childhood chronic illness. To achieve this goal, the team of parents, health care professionals, and researchers proposes the following specific aim: Develop, implement, and test a unique psycho-educational program, Living with Childhood Chronic Illness (the Program), for effectiveness with parents of children who have chronic illnesses. The investigators propose the following hypotheses: At both 6 and 12 month follow-up points, parents taking part in the intervention, in contrast to control parents, will have: Greater perceived self-efficacy regarding their ability to manage the child's chronic condition; Greater parental ability to involve their child in shared management activities; Greater parental ability to cope at 6 and 12 months following the end of the intervention; Greater emotional health; and Greater parental perceived family quality of life.
