Evaluation of the Impact of a Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax in Chile

Chronic DiseaseObesity

The purpose of this study is to evaluate formally the short term impacts of the tax policy applied to Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) in Chile. The Impuesto Adicional a las Bebidas Analcohólicas (IABA, or "additional tax on soft drinks") in Chile was enacted in October 2014, affecting any non-alcoholic beverages to which colorants, flavourings or sweeteners have been added. For beverages above an added sugar concentration of at least 6.25 grams per 100ml (or equivalent proportion), the tax was increased from 13% to 18%, while for those below this threshold the tax was decreased to 10%, producing an 8% tax difference between these beverage groups. This impact evaluation analysis of the Chilean sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax will estimate the impact of increasing the tax as well as decreasing the tax on soft drinks. The study will use household level grocery purchasing data for Chile. The purchasing records are available from October 2011 to September 2015 (three years before; and one year after the implementation of the tax in October 2014). The investigators will use a series of quasi-experimental approaches to evaluate the causal impact of the SSB tax policy on consumers' behaviour as well as on industry responses in the form of pricing and price promotion decisions.

Assessing Costs & Cost-variability Among Enrollees of Health Insurance Programs Utilizing Charlson's...

Multiple Chronic Illnesses

This study will involve the evaluation of the cost profile of about approximately 241,000 patients (15,000 who are members of the Generations Plus/ Northern Manhattan Health Network AND 226,000 members of a large self insured union trust fund). We will test the hypothesis that as comorbidity scores exceed three-four, patients will have an exponential increase in average yearly cost with a parallel exponential increase in cost variability. We will examine the relationship between comorbidity and health insurance costs and variability in costs among patients enrolled in health plans.

Doctor's Health - Health Behavior of Physicians in Germany

Chronic DiseasesChronic Illnesses

This is an observational study to assess the health behavior of Physicians from medical practices in Germany. Physicians will be asked by a questionnaire (self-report) on health behavior, self-diagnostics and self-medication in case of sickness. We will send the questionnaire to 1000 General Practitioners and to 300 medical specialists in Germany. We expect a response rate of 25-30 %. After electronically data-entry we will run a descriptive analysis for primary outcome. Results may provide a better understanding of the Physicians health behavior.

Chronic Pelvic Pain Study of Individuals With Diagnoses or Symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis and/...

Interstitial CystitisChronic Prostatitis

The Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Chronic Pelvic Pain (MAPP) Research Network has been established to focus on a broader approach to the study of Interstitial Cystitis (IC)/Painful Bladder Syndrome (PBS) in men and women, and Chronic Prostatitis (CP)/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS) in men, than previously undertaken. Participants with some form or symptoms of IC or CP are being asked to join the Trans-MAPP Epidemiology and Phenotyping (EP) Study. As with many chronic pain disorders, IC and CP are poorly understood, and treatment is often not helpful. The goal of this study is to better understand how pain is felt in people with IC or CP. The MAPP EP Study is an observational study that will enroll approximately 360 participants from 6 Discovery Sites and 3 Satellite Sites across the U.S. We will ask questions and gather information about the health and life of the participants for research purposes. No study treatment or interventions will be given to participants in MAPP. We hope that this study will lead to improvement in the treatment of IC and CP.
