E-aid Sleep-focused TrEatment for Prevention of Major Depression (STEP-MD)

InsomniaDepression1 more

In the past, there were studies on relationship between insomnia and depression, and those studies found that depression can be the result of untreated insomnia. Mostly insomnia precedes depression, and is a marker for recurrence of depression. Research suggests that insomnia may cause depression by changing the emotional response. In this study, investigators will establish the national online cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (e-aid Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, eCBTI ) tools, and online health education on sleep (e-aid Sleep Hygiene Education, eSHE ) tools for controls. Investigators will be testing whether eCBTI can reduce the incidence of depression in patients with sleep disorders, increasing remission rate of depression, and a corresponding reduction in suicidal ideas, compared with eSHE control groups.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia for Chinese Adults: a RCT

Insomnia

Background: Insomnia is a common mental problem, where people experienced difficulty falling asleep, problem maintaining asleep and early morning awakening. It is highly prevalent world-wide and in Hong Kong, causing significant suffering and distress. While evidence based intervention exists, e.g. cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), there will not enough therapists to meet treatment demand. A more efficient delivery of treatment, e.g. internet based therapy is called for that can delivery treatment more cost efficiently by requiring lesser therapist time. Objective: This study aims at evaluating the effectiveness of CBTi (Gp) on treating Chinese insomniac adults in Hong Kong. There has been criticism that most clinical trials have been conducted with Caucasians in Western countries and little has been done with ethnic minorities, including Asians in these countries, not to mention Asians in Asian countries, e.g., Chinese in Hong Kong. Design: A two-arm parallel-group randomised controlled trial, comparing the treatment and waitlist group Method: A CBTi protocol would be developed. Approximately 60 Chinese adults with insomnia will be recruited in Hong Kong and randomised into one of the two groups (treatment vs. waitlist). The treatment last for 6 weeks, plus a 3-month follow-up period. The primary outcome measure will be Insomnia Severity Index (ISI).

OsteoArthritis and Therapy for Sleep

Insomnia Related to Osteoarthritis Pain

Osteoarthritis (OA) pain affects 50 percent of older adults, more than half of whom also experience significant sleep disturbance. This randomized trial will determine whether a telephone-based cognitive behavioral treatment targeting insomnia in older adults with chronic severe OA-related insomnia and pain results in substantially greater reductions in insomnia severity and in related improvements in pain, fatigue, mood, quality of life and healthcare costs compared to telephone-delivered education (attention control) about insomnia. The trial will test an intervention that if demonstrated to have long term efficacy is scalable and has the potential for wide-scale deployment in healthcare systems.
