Malnutrition increases morbidity and mortality in this population and its treatment improves patient survival and health status The purpose of this study is to compare two strategies to improve nutritional status in hemodialysis patients: renal-specific oral supplement (237 ml) versus egg albumin-based protein supplement (30 g) on a daily basis. This trial uses the Malnutrition Inflammation Score (MIS) and Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) in addition to most used biochemical markers to determine nutritional status.

End Stage Renal DiseaseThe aim of the study is to identify hepatic enzyme and estrogen-dependent biochemical changes that occur when dialysis patients are treated with dialyzers known to leach BPA (Bisphenol-A) into the blood, such as the commercially available Fresenius F160NR, as compared with the same chemical evaluations in patients being treated with the non BPA containing Nipro Elisio-15H dialyzer. Evaluations of patient's chemistries will be obtained prior to and after 2 months of standard dialysis treatments with each dialyzer.
Prevention of Peritonitis in Peritoneal Dialysis
Kidney FailureChronic2 moreBACKGROUND: Peritonitis remains a significant problem in peritoneal dialysis. It is the leading cause of technique failure, and contributes to mortality. The incidence is highest during the first year of treatment. Non-compliance with the Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) protocol is shown to be an important risk factor for peritonitis. Reinforcement of knowledge and ability to perform PD therefore appears to be a possible way to reduce the incidence of peritonitis. This will be studied in The PEritonitis Prevention Study (PEPS). METHODS: The objective of this randomized, multi-centre investigation,which will include 750 new PD patients who can perform (PD) without assistance, is to evaluate if regular retraining can reduce the incidence of peritonitis, the technique-failure rate, and the hospitalisation days due to peritonitis compared with regular follow-up regimen. Patients in the intervention group will tested by a PD-technique test and a questionnaire at regular intervals after PD-start and after every peritonitis episode with focus on infection prophylaxis. If needed, they will be retrained. The control group will be treated according to the routine of the center. The study is ongoing in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, the Netherlands, and the UK. The study will go on for 6 years.

Trial of Hemodialysis Based Exercise for Strength Improvement Study
End Stage Renal DiseaseStudy Hypothesis: The combination of aerobic and resistance exercise training will improve walking speed compared to either individual intervention. Brief Summary: Sixty hemodialysis participants who meet inclusion and exclusion criteria will be randomized to 20 weeks of supervised exercise, using either: (i) on-dialysis aerobic exercise using a bike ergometer; (ii) pre-dialysis leg strength training using weights; or (iii) both. The primary outcome is walking speed over 4-metres. Secondary outcomes will include: (i) short physical performance battery; (ii) health-related quality of life [EuroQOL-5D-5L]; (iii) Dialysis recovery time; (iv) Nottingham extended activities of daily living (EADL) index; (v) Leg strength; (vi) body composition and anthropometry.
