Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects up to 14 million people and is among the top five leading causes of death worldwide. Although COPD is a disease of the lungs, recent evidence indicates that COPD is associated with multiple systemic consequences including vascular endothelial dysfunction. Recently, it has been suggested that more patients with COPD die from cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease than of direct pulmonary complications. Examination of the mechanisms that contribute to a reduction nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability resulting in vascular endothelial dysfunction in patients with COPD are important as endothelial dysfunction has been indicated to be an independent predictor of future atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and events.

Short Compared With Standard Duration of Antibiotic Treatment for AECOPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common diseases in the world. Acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) refers to an exaggeration of the symptoms of the disease. Currently, the 3 Anthonisen criteria appear to be most satisfactory in defining the AECOPD: The increase in the volume of sputum, the alteration of its appearance which becomes purulent and The increase in dyspnea. Our recent study, showed that administration of levofloxacin is superior to placebo in the treatment of AECOPD; it is accompanied by a substantial reduction in mortality and a significant reduction in the residence time in hospital.The choice of antibiotic to be used in this situation is challenging to the clinician who must choose between traditional antibiotics (cyclins, aminopenicillins, cotrimoxazole...) and new antimicrobial agents. Antibiotic treatment duration was not based on a strong scientific rationale. Yet at the time of the dramatic emergence of bacterial resistance, reducing the selection pressure by reducing the exposure to antibiotic should be a major issue. In addition, the decrease in costs and associated side effects reinforces the interest of short treatments. Unfortunately, few studies with a satisfactory methodology are available in the literature. In fact, we present the rational and the interest in shortening the durations of antibiotic treatment of AECOPD by levofloxacin in patients admitted to the emergency for exacerbation of COPD and to study the epidemiology of viral and bacterial AECOPD.

This study evaluates the effects of a nasal restriction device for inspiratory muscle training (FeelBreathe) after 8 weeks of exercise intervention on exercise capacity, quality of life, dyspnea and inspitarotory muscle strength in patients with stable COPD. Participants were divided in three groups: 1) exercise intervention using the Feelbreathe® device (FB group), 2) exercise intervention with oronasal breathing without FB (ONB group) and 3) no participation in the exercise intervention as control group (CG).

Purpose: The purpose is to determine the effect of therapeutic touch on the sleep quality and anxiety of individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Material and methods: This study was conducted between March 2018 and March 2019 as a randomized controlled experimental study conducted with pre-test post-test model. In addition to the routine nursing care, therapeutic touch (TT) and study scales were applied to the experimental group for a total of three sessions, once a day and 10 minutes each, for three consecutive days and only study scales were applied to the control group. The data was collected using Personal Information Form, Richard-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire and State Anxiety Inventory.

This is a first time in human (FTIH) study designed to evaluate the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic (PK) profile of single and repeat doses of GSK3923868 inhalation powder in both healthy participants and asthmatics. This is a 3-part, randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study of GSK3923868, administered as an inhalation powder blend (GSK3923868 capsules for inhalation) via Mono-dose inhaler in healthy participants (Parts A and B) and in participants with asthma (Part C). The duration of study participation for each part A, B and C will be 11, 9 and 8 weeks, respectively.

Home based and tele-rehabilitation programs may be potentially useful to deliver and to maintain the benefits in difficult-to-reach areas. Tele-health technologies allow for distribution of healthcare services and exchange of information between healthcare providers and patients in different geographical locations and provide an important tool to reach people living in rural communities. In a previous single center study, we had shown that a home pedometer assisted program to enhance physical activity was as effective as and cheaper than a standard outpatient supervised exercise training program.13 We wondered whether the results of that study 13 might be confirmed in a larger multicenter randomized controlled trial (RCT). Therefore the aim of this multicenter RCT was to evaluate the benefits and costs of a program of pedometer assisted physical activity as compared to standard hospital outpatient supervised exercise training program.
