Co-administration of Olodaterol Respimat® and Tiotropium Handihaler®

The overall objective of this study is to assess efficacy and safety of 12 weeks, once daily, orally inhaled co-administration of olodaterol 5 µg (delivered by the Respimat® Inhaler) and tiotropium (delivered by the Handihaler® as Spiriva Handihaler®), compared to tiotropium (Spiriva Handihaler®) monotherapy on lung function in patients with COPD.

Indacaterol Versus Tiotropium on Dynamic Hyperinflation in COPD

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Exercise intolerance is a major complain of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Dynamic hyperinflation has been recognized as an important limiting factor responsible for the appearance of intolerable dyspnea during exercise. Regular treatment with long-acting bronchodilators promotes a more sustained reduction of hyperinflation and consequent symptom relief and increase in the patient's ability to overcome physical demands of daily life. Tiotropium bromide (TIO) is a new generation, long-acting anticholinergic bronchodilator that significantly improves lung function, reduces symptoms and improves exercise tolerance in patients with advanced COPD. Indacaterol is a new ultra-long duration (>24 h) β2-agonist, which promotes sustained dilation of the bronchi with a once-daily administration. Compared to tiotropium, indacaterol provides evidence that is as effective as tiotropium for bronchodilation, as well as other clinical outcomes such as dyspnea and state of health. However, comparative effects of indacaterol versus tiotropium with regard to outcomes in tolerance, dyspnea and dynamic lung hyperinflation during exercise is scarce. We hypothesized that indacaterol and TIO are not different in terms of exercise tolerance and its determinants (dynamic hyperinflation and dyspnea).

NVA237 BID Versus Placebo Twelve-week Efficacy Study

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

The study serves to determine whether the treatment of patients with stable, symptomatic Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) with the investigational drug NVA237 is efficient and safe. The efficacy and safety of the drug will be tested against a placebo treatment. The primary criterion to assess efficacy will be the difference between the serial lung function measurements of patients who have been treated for 12 weeks with NVA237 versus those that have received placebo treatment for 12 weeks. A serial lung function measurement (FEV1 testing) will be conducted and the "area under the curve" will be the measure for the ability to breathe.

The efficacy and safety of the drug was tested for twice daily dosing against once daily dosing.

Continuous Versus Interval Walking Training in Patients With COPD - a Pilot Study

Chronic Obstructive Airway Disease

This study will investigate the effects of interval walking training versus continuous walking training in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Patients will be recruited during a 3-week inpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program and will be randomized to one of the two intervention groups. All walking training sessions will be performed on the same treadmill. Walking intensity in the continuous walking group will be 60 percent of the average speed of the 6-minute walking test. Patients in the interval training group will perform high intensity intervals at 120% of the 6-minute walking test speed for 60 seconds alternating with 60 seconds of rest. The total exercise duration will be progressively increased from 10 to 32 minutes.

Budesonide + Procaterol HFA MDI is a novel asthma product containing both budesonide and procaterol in a single inhaler. Budesonide is a corticosteroid that treats underlying airway inflammation in asthma. Procaterol is a direct acting sympathomimetic with predominantly Beta-adrenoceptor stimulant activity selective to Beta-2 receptors (a Beta-2 agonist). It is used as a bronchodilator in the management of reversible airways obstructive pulmonary disease. Budesonide and Procaterol therefore have complementary effects, treating two different components of asthma.

The study is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multiple-dose, pilot study of orally-administered ivacaftor in subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Subjects will be administered the study drug ivacaftor 150 mg (or placebo) twice daily (BID).
