Blood Fibrocytes During an Exacerbation and Lung Function Decline in Patients With COPD in Primary...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

This study aims to estimate the association between blood fibrocytes measured during a suspected exacerbation and 3-year decline forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), in patients with Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in primary care, with a history of smoking, independently of the number of exacerbations and of tobacco or occupational exposure.

Causes of Appetite Loss in Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD

The project looks at causes of appetite loss in patients with COPD. It is know that active systemic inflammation can lead to appetite loss and COPD is classified as a disease lead by inflammation. But it has never been investigated if the patient with COPD has other causes of appetite loss such as physical, psychological or social barriers for not reaching a sufficient dietary intake. The study uses a homemade questionnaire, the CAT-scale and the CNAQ-score to evaluate the extent of appetite loss and certain demographic characteristics of the participants. There will be made correlation analysis for CNAQ-score and continuous variables and there will be tested for significant differences between the group who scores as low appetite and the group that scores with a normal appetite via CNAQ. The second part of the study invites patients to participate in a semi-structured interview, that focuses on the patient's experience with appetite loss, meals and food. The interviews will be transcribed and analysed.

Management of Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Granada: a Clinical Audit

COPD

It is actually unknown how are the COPD clinical guidelines followed in primary care in Andalusia, specially for diagnosis and follow up of patients with this diseases. Evaluation of COPD Co-Pilot

Pulmonary DiseaseChronic Obstructive

The purpose of this research study is to investigate the potential benefits of participant use of a smartphone application ("App") called COPD Co-Pilot™. When used by the participant, COPD Co-Pilot™ may provide early detection of worsening COPD symptoms. Early symptom detection may allow the pulmonary providers and nurses to respond with timely medical advice and treatment. The goal for use of COPD Co-Pilot™ is to reduce the frequency and duration of hospitalizations, emergency department visits, and hospital readmissions. The study will also examine the financial impact of the COPD Co-Pilot™ program to determine whether costs of hospital stays, emergency department visits, and hospital readmissions differ when patients are enrolled in COPD Co-Pilot™ than when they are not enrolled. Another purpose of this study is to measure patient satisfaction with use of COPD Co-Pilot™.

Evaluation of Novel Lung Function Parameters in Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease...

COPDObstructive Ventilation Disorder1 more

Current guideline-based criteria defining COPD do not meet the challenges set by the complex pathophysiology of the disease. The investigators therefore aimed to evaluate novel or not widely used diagnostic approaches for the detection and therapeutic monitoring of COPD.

Systemic Consequences and Comorbidities in Mild/Moderate Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD),...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

The aim of this prospective case-control study is to investigate the prevalence, severity and incidence of systemic consequences in newly detected patients with mild and moderate Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Special attention will be paid to skeletal muscle dysfunction and physical inactivity as these factors are, together with smoking, potentially modifiable.

Assessment of Updated Evaluation Scores in Critically ILL COPD Patients Admitted to Assiut University...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) represent a leading cause of morbidity and mortality.Patients admitted to hospital present higher mortality rates. The investigators lack the specific tools that allow us to easily classify and establish the individual prognosis for each patient during their hospitalization. Rational of the study:to identify the predictive factors for hospital mortality in critically ill patients admitted to hospital due to an episode of COPD exacerbation.

Lung Volume Reduction Via Coils in Patients With COPD

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

For patients with emphysema lung volume reduction (ELVR) could be an expedient approach for the reduction of distension of the lung. ELVR may be performed using RePneu® Coils. After the insertion of the coils distended lung sections shrink so that healthy parts can expand. In the present study investigators intend to examine, whether the insertion of the coils improves diaphragm function and force of the breathing muscles. Investigators hypothesize that reduction of lung volume eliminates or reduces flattening of the diaphragm and relieves breathing muscles, respectively respiratory pump, which aims to reduce dyspnea.

End-of-Life Fear in Patients With End-Stage Lung Disease (COPD)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary DiseaseEnd-of-Life Fear2 more

The aim of the study is to develop an interview to ask patients with COPD about their fear of death and dying, their needs and wishes at the end-of-life. Afterwards, the patients receive a brief psychological intervention to develop coping strategies for chronic illness. Beside this a general purpose of this intervention is to improve patients' quality of life.
