The BRAIN Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Study: Bringing to Light the Risk Factors

DeliriumCognition Disorders1 more

The primary purpose of this proposal will be to identify potentially modifiable risk factors of long-term cognitive impairment (i.e. development of delirium and exposure to sedative and analgesic medications) in ICU patients. The investigators will quantify the independent contribution of these risk factors to the incidence of long-term cognitive impairment, controlling for other established risk factors including age, pre-existing cognitive impairment, and apolipoprotein E (apoE) genotype. Quantifying the contributions of these modifiable risk factors will pave the way for the development of preventive and/or treatment strategies to reduce the incidence, severity and/or duration of long-term cognitive impairment and improve functional recovery for patients with critical illness.

The Effects of Atomoxetine on Cognition and Brain Function Based on Catechol-O-methyltransferase(COMT)...

SchizophreniaMemory Disorders1 more

This study will evaluate whether Atomoxetine improves cognition in healthy volunteers as well as patients with schizophrenia. Atomoxetine is a drug that has been Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for Attention Deficit Disorder and allegedly increase the amount of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the frontal cortex of the brain.

The CAMPUS Project: Cholinergic Augmentation of Cognitive Deficits in Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia

The present study will specify and delineate the separate components of cognitive deficits and examine the effects of adjunctive cholinergic augmentation on these cognitive deficits as well as psychopathology in schizophrenic patients treated with an antipsychotic compound with no aberrant binding affinity for the cholinergic receptor system. The hypothesis is that cholinergic augmentation using donepezil will improve cognitive deficits, sensory gating deficits, and psychopathology in schizophrenic patients treated with an atypical antipsychotic (ziprasidone).

CNS Tau Kinetics in Healthy Aging and Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's DiseaseBrain Diseases10 more

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia and currently has no disease modifying treatments or simple accurate diagnostic tests. The goal of this project is to study how tau (a protein thought to cause AD) is made, transported and cleared in the human body. Better understanding of these processes may lead to improved understanding of AD, earlier diagnosis and a way to evaluate treatment.

The Effect of JNJ-39393406 on Event Related Potentials in Stable Schizophrenic Patients

SchizophreniaAlzheimer's Disease1 more

This study in patients with stable schizophrenia will investigate the effect of JNJ-39393406 on Event Related Potentials (Auditory Evoked Potential [AEP] P50, AEP P300 and Mismatch Negativity [MMN]) after single dose administration.

The Effects of Sex Hormones on Cognition and Mood in Older Adults

Cognition DisordersMood Disorders

This study is investigating the effects of hormone replacement therapy on memory, mental abilities and mood in older adults aged 65-90. During the nine month long study, men will take testosterone for three months and women will take estrogen for three months. At four points during the study (once every three months), participants will complete a test battery and have blood drawn.

EARLY DETECTION OF DEAFNESS IN A MEMORY CENTER

Cognitive DisorderDeafness

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), like neurodegenerative diseases, appears insidiously with age. As major public health issues, they are nonetheless under-diagnosed because the presence of one can hinder the objectification of the other. The CogAudio project aims to detect early and in an ambulatory mode in a memory centre a speech perception disorder in noise thanks to the VRB test in patients weakened by cognitive disorders.

Physical Exercise And Cognitive Engagement Outcomes for Mild Neurocognitive Disorder

Mild Cognitive ImpairmentMemory Disorders8 more

Behavioral interventions currently provide the most useful approach to addressing the behavioral and social needs of those with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer's or other diseases. This randomized, multisite, 3-arm study will investigate the impact of computerized brain fitness vs yoga vs an active control group (wellness education) on changes in cognitive function, daily functioning and quality of life in persons with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and their partner. In addition, in vivo neuroimaging measures of plasticity during the pre- and post-intervention periods will be measured and compared between the three different treatment groups. These neuroimaging measures of plasticity will be investigated in their relationship to the cognitive outcomes within each group.
