Home-Based Dual-Task Training for Older Adults
Mild Cognitive ImpairmentThis project is focused on conducting a home-based, thinking while moving exercise intervention for adults 65 years or older, who have mild cognitive impairment, that will integrate several effective training modalities including non-contact cardio-kickboxing, stepping exercise, balance/functional training, and muscle strengthening. Cognitive function, physical function, and dual-task abilities will be assessed over the 12-week intervention and comparisons will be made between participants in the exercise intervention and control participants receiving no intervention.

Half of the participants will be randomized to tDCS group, while the other half will be randomized to receive sham tDCS.

Results are compared at pre-intervention, post-intervention, and 6-month post-intervention to provide evidence of benefits of Chinese calligraphy practice.

Preoperative Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid on POCD in Elderly Non-cardiac Surgical Patients
Post Operative Cognitive DysfunctionThis study will recruit patients more than 65 years old eligible for non-cardiac surgery. Patients who participate will take either vitamin B12 and folic acid supplementation or placebo for 7 days before surgery. Neuropsychological test battery (NPB) will be tested before intervention and at discharge for determination of Post operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). Another group of non-surgical elderly participants will also be tested for NPB to account for learning effect in POCD diagnosis. The hypothesis is that preoperative vitamin B12 supplementation will reduce the incidence of POCD in elderly patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery.

Mild CognitIve ImpairmentAlzheimer's DiseaseThe purposes of this study are: To investigate whether a 3-month exercise training program would improve cognitive function, motor performance, integrity of brain fiber tracts and cerebral blood flow; To investigate the possible neuro-anatomical and neurophysiological mechanisms of exercise training on cognitive function, motor performance, integrity of brain fiber tract and cerebral blood flow in patients with mild cognitive impairment and in those with early Alzheimer's disease; To investigate the influence of different apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotypes on the above-mentioned exercise effects. The results of this study will provide medical evidence for the effects of exercise training on mild cognitive impairment and on early Alzheimer's disease; and will provide understanding of the mechanisms mediating these effects. More importantly, the results serve as the basis for future larger-scale exercise clinical trials for these two patient populations.
