Study of Cognitive Reserve Disorder Affecting Depression in Aged Related Hearing Loss Via Rest State...

In this study, patients with aged-related hearing loss with depression and without depression were evaluated by audiometry (pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry), cognitive function assessment (MMSE scale for simple mental state test, MoCA Scale for Montreal Cognitive Assessment), and depressive symptoms assessment (GDS-15 and HAMD), resting state EEG. The ananlysis of resting state EEG included power spectral density, traceability analysis, functional connectivity, microstate, clustering coefficient, characteristic path length, characteristic path permeability, and compatibility coefficient. EEG signals were used to explore the activation of brain regions and poor connectivity of brain regions affected by cognitive reserve dissonance on the level of brain imaging. This paper innovatively explores the influence of cognitive reserve dissonance on depressive mood in senile deafness by means of audiological assessment, cognitive function assessment, depression symptom assessment, resting state electroencephalography (EEG) and other technical means. Auditory and cognitive cortical activation, functional connectivity of brain regions, small-world attributes and microstates were analyzed in senile deafness with or without depression at the brain imaging level.

Delirium is common in older adults after inpatient surgery and may be associated with cognitive decline. Advances in surgical and anesthetic techniques have led to increasing numbers of older adults undergoing surgery on an outpatient basis. However, few studies have investigated cognitive disorders of older adults before or after ambulatory surgery. Increased age and pre-existing cognitive impairment are strong risk factors for cognitive decline after surgery, yet older adults are not screened for cognitive impairment before surgery. Existing screening tools require specially trained staff for test administration and in-person testing. Virtual cognitive screening has not been evaluated in surgical patients. In this study, investigators will determine the feasibility of using Cogniciti's Brain Health Assessment (BHA) - a validated online cognitive screening tool that can be self-administered from a patient's home before surgery - to screen older adults before ambulatory surgery.

Characterizing Cognitive Decline in Late Life Depression: The ADNI Depression Project

Major DepressionLate Life Depression (LLD)

The purpose of this research study is to characterize the mechanisms contributing to cognitive impairment and accelerated cognitive decline in Late Life Depression (LLD). This is a non-randomized, observational, non-treatment study. One hundred and twenty (120) subjects who meet criteria for Major Depression or LLD will be enrolled for a period of 30 months. Data from an additional 300 non-depressed subjects will be used from ADNI studies for comparison. Depression history, symptom severity and health information will be collected at the initial psychiatric visit to determine eligibility. A 3 Tesla (3T) Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan and florbetapir (18F-AV-45) amyloid imaging will be conducted at the ADNI clinic site visits. Collection of plasma and serum for biomarkers, clinical assessments and cognitive assessments will be conducted at two time points. Blood samples will also be collected for genetic analysis.

Odor identification deficits, which are a result of early Alzheimer's Disease (AD) pathology in the olfactory bulb and tract as well as olfactory projection areas in the medial temporal lobe (entorhinal and piriform cortex and hippocampus), lateral and central orbitofrontal cortex and several other regions, occur in AD and strongly predict mild cognitive impairment (MCI) conversion to AD. Our pilot data, along with converging findings in the literature, suggests that odor identification deficits, both incremental change over time and change in response to an anticholinergic challenge, may be clinically simple, relatively inexpensive, predictors of cognitive improvement with acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (ACheI) treatment with potential clinical implications for predicting improvement and monitoring ACheI therapy.

With the development of population aging, the incidence of covert stroke and cognitive dysfunction gradually increased. Currently, there is still lack of prospective cohort study with large sample size on the relationship between perioperative covert stroke and postoperative cognitive dysfunction. The investigators will perform a prospective cohort study. The aim of the study is to determine whether there is an association between perioperative covert stroke and postoperative cognitive dysfunction in elderly patients undergoing noncardiac surgery.

The Alpha Omega Cohort is a prospective study of 4,837 state-of-the-art drug-treated Dutch patients aged 60-80 years who had a clinically diagnosed myocardial infarction up to 10 years before enrolment. During the first 40 months of follow-up, patients took part in an experimental study of low doses n-3 fatty acids (Alpha Omega Trial, ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00127452). At baseline (2002-2006), data on medical history, medication use, diet, lifestyle and other factors were collected by means of questionnaires. Patients were physically examined by trained research nurses and blood samples were obtained. Follow-up for vital status and cause-specific mortality is ongoing. The trial was approved by a central medical ethics committee (Haga Hospital, The Hague, The Netherlands) and all patients provided written informed consent.

Postoperative delirium (POD) and postoperative cognitive decline (POCD) are common after surgeries in the elderly, especially after cardiothoracic surgery. These conditions are associated with adverse short- and long-term outcomes. Multiple conditions in the perioperative period have been proposed as risk factors of POD and POCD. Incidences vary across institutions due to differences in screening and diagnostic tools.
