A Proactive Intervention Promoting Strategies for Sleep and Recovery in Nurses

SleepOccupational Stress8 more

Considering the known challenges facing newly graduated nurses, there are possibilities to implement preventive actions. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of a preventive intervention among newly graduated nurses, supporting proactive strategies for sleep and recuperation in relation to work related stress and shift work.

Minocycline for the Treatment of Early-Phase Schizophrenia

Negative and Cognitive Symptoms in Schizophrenia

Current antipsychotics have only a limited effect on two core symptoms of schizophrenia, negative symptoms and cognitive deficits. Minocycline is a second-generation tetracycline which has a beneficial effect in various neurological disorders. Recent findings in animal models and human case-reports suggest its potential for the treatment of these symptoms of schizophrenia. The current study aims to examine the efficacy of minocycline as add-on treatment for alleviating negative and cognitive symptoms in early-phase schizophrenia. The study will utilize a longitudinal double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled design with patients followed for six-months. Early-phase schizophrenia patients were recruited and randomly allocated to a minocycline or placebo treatment (2:1 ratio; 200 mg/day). The primary outcome measures are the Scale for Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) and assessments of executive functions.

Prevention of Head Impacts in Football: The HuTT Technique

Head TraumaCognitive Manifestations

The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the helmet-less tackling training (the HuTT Technique) intervention to reduce head impacts in high school football players and to gain an understanding of the neurocognitive effects of repetitive head impacts in football. The investigators hypothesis is that the HuTT Technique will result in a reduced frequency and magnitude of helmet impacts than the control group measured by a head impact measurement system. Also, the investigators hypothesize the HuTT Technique group will demonstrate less changes in neurocognitive scores in the mid and post season evaluations compared to the control group. Head impacts will be measured using the SIM-G impact monitor made by Triax Technology. The SIM-G impact monitor measures the location, magnitude, and direction of every head impact in real time and is stored on a protected cloud-based system. The sensor is worn by each athlete in a headband or skullcap. Neurocognitive function will be measured using the Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) test. The test is used as a tool to determine baseline neurocognitive function and is used in comparison if an athlete was to be injured to ensure he/she returns to baseline. ImPACT measures memory (verbal, visual, working), processing speed and reaction time using a variety of tests. Subjects will be recruited from local high school football teams and will include freshman, sophomores and juniors. Since the study is expected to run for 2 years, seniors will not be eligible for participation. The target is to recruit at least 150 total subjects. All subjects will be equipped with a new helmet that is fitted to their head and a headband that will be used to hold the head impact telemetry sensor. In addition, all subjects will take an ImPACT test preseason, midseason and postseason. At the conclusion of each season, all of the impacts from the SIM-G impact monitor system and ImPACT test scores will be analyzed. The relevant outcome measures to be analyzed include head impact frequency, location, magnitude, symptom scores, memory, visual motor speed and reaction time composite scores. Statistical analysis will be used to determine if the HuTT intervention minimized head impacts and neurocognitive decline compared to the control group.

Breast Cancer Patients' Cognitive Symptoms After Information About Chemotherapy-Related Cognitive...

Breast CancerCognitive Symptoms1 more

Previous cross-sectional studies have shown that informing cancer patients about potential chemotherapy-related cognitive symptoms may negatively affect perceived cognitive symptoms and verbal memory performance. A multicenter, randomized study in newly diagnosed breast cancer patients receiving (neo) adjuvant chemotherapy was performed to evaluate this Adverse Information Effect (AIE) over time and investigated whether inviting patients to self-affirm can reduce such AIEs on perceived cognitive symptoms and cognitive test performance.

Acute and Residual Effects of Caffeinated Beer

Neurobehavioral ManifestationsDrug Related Sleep Disturbance1 more

The aim of this study is to develop information about the acute and residual effects of a new product being targeted to young adults. Using a double placebo-controlled 2 X 2 factorial model study design, we will compare the acute and residual effects on driving impairment of caffeinated alcohol, non-caffeinated alcohol, caffeinated placebo, and non-caffeinated placebo. Under the alcohol conditions, participants will receive sufficient alcoholic beverage to attain a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .12 g%. Participants will be 144 undergraduate and graduate students, and recent college graduates.

Psychotropic Drug Use in the Elderly Living in Nursing Homes and the Influence of a Structured Drug...

Cognitive SymptomDepression6 more

The overall aim of this study is to explore if a structured drug review will change clinical symptoms and the psychotropic drugs prescription rate in the elderly living in nursing homes (participants of the study). The study will examine how training of nursing home physicians on reviewing prescription lists using the Norwegian general practice criteria - Nursing homes (NorGeP-NH) will influence the participants' clinical symptoms such as cognition, depression, anxiety and their quality of life. Secondary, we will analyse how a structured drug review will influence further psychotropic drug prescribing rates in nursing homes. The hypothesis for this study are: Training of nursing home physicians on doing a systematic drug review will decrease the participants' clinical symptoms and improve their Quality of Life. A systematic drug review will decrease the psychotropic drug prescription rates compared to before the drug review.

Computer-Based Training in Patients With Post-Chemotherapy Cognitive Impairment

Breast CancerCognitive Symptoms1 more

The investigators hypothesize that continuous active interaction with environments that are demanding to sensory, cognitive, and motor systems, together with imbedded rewards for successful performance, will help improve memory and cognitive functioning in patients suffering from "chemobrain".

MBSR During AI Therapy for Breast Cancer

Breast CancerCognitive Symptom

This study will use non-invasive neuroimaging (i.e., MRI) to examine whether Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) improves neural markers of cognitive function for postmenopausal women taking aromatase inhibitor (AI) therapy for breast cancer. The pilot randomized controlled trial will obtain preliminary efficacy of MBSR versus Health Enhancement Program (HEP) active control to improve neural markers of cognitive function. The final sample will include 32 postmenopausal women with breast cancer. MBSR and HEP groups will meet for a matched schedule of 8 weekly 2.5-hour sessions and a one-day weekend retreat. Specimen and data collection will be done at three time points: pre-randomization (i.e., within three weeks before beginning the intervention), within three weeks after completion of the intervention, and approximately three months (+/- three weeks) post intervention. Change scores for neuroimaging parameter estimates will be correlated with change scores for measures of cognitive function and affect. Differential expression of genes will be correlated with neuroimaging parameter estimates.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Sleep Quality and Neurocognitive Performance

Neurobehavioral ManifestationsSleep Deprivation1 more

The purpose of this study is to understand patients' neurocognitive performance shortly after discharge from the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and the potential effect of sleep quality in the MICU on those neurocognitive outcomes. The investigators hypothesize that post-ICU neurocognitive function and patient overall ICU sleep experience will improve through a pre-existing MICU sleep improvement initiative.
