Biological therapies such as gefitinib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking the enzymes necessary for tumor cell growth. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining gefitinib with fluorouracil, leucovorin, and irinotecan may kill more tumor cells

Diet Modulation of Bacterial Sulfur and Bile Acid Metabolism and Colon Cancer Risk

Determine in the context of a controlled crossover diet-intervention trial the role of taurocholic acid metabolism by gut bacteria in African American subjects at elevated risk for colorectal cancer (CRC). Two isocaloric diets, an animal-based diet high in taurine and saturated fat (HT-HSAT) and a plant-based, low in taurine and low saturated fat (LT-LSAT) will be used to determine the extent to which the relationship between diet (independent variable) and mucosal markers of CRC risk including epithelial proliferation, oxidative stress, DNA damage, and primary and secondary bile acid pools and biomarkers of inflammation (dependent variables) is explained by the abundance of sulfidogenic bacteria and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) concentrations &/or deoxycholic acid (DCA) and DCA-producing bacteria clostridium scindens (mediator variables).

Colonic Neoplasm

All patients presenting at participating hospitals during the recruitment period with a newly diagnosed colon cancer, regardless of stage and planned treatment, will be eligible for inclusion. They will answer a questionnaire on health related quality of life, physical symptoms, functional impairments and socioeconomic status at diagnosis and after 12, 36 months. Clinical data including recurrence, survival, surgical treatment, oncologic result (pathology report) and adjuvant treatment will be collected from the Swedish ColoRectal Cancer Registry (SCRCR)

The purpose of this study is to test the safety of GI-4000 and see what effects (good and bad) it has against cancer over time. This study is also being done to measure the immune response to GI-4000. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as oxaliplatin, leucovorin, fluorouracil, and capecitabine, work in different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, can block cancer growth in different ways. Some block the ability of cancer cells to grow and spread. Others find cancer cells and help kill them or deliver cancer-killing substances to them. Combining chemotherapy with monoclonal antibody therapy may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known which combination chemotherapy regimen with bevacizumab works better in treating colorectal cancer. This randomized phase III trial is studying giving two different combination chemotherapy regimens together with bevacizumab and comparing how well they work in treating patients with locally advanced, metastatic, or recurrent colorectal cancer

Giving capecitabine and oxaliplatin before surgery may shrink the tumor so that it can be removed. Giving capecitabine and oxaliplatin after surgery may kill any remaining tumor cells. This phase II trial is studying how well capecitabine and oxaliplatin work when given before and after surgery in treating patients with resectable liver metastases that is secondary to colorectal cancer

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug and giving drugs in different ways may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known if surgery is more effective with or without chemotherapy for colon cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to evaluate whether perioperative 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) chemotherapy after curative resection could improve overall survival and disease-free survival in patients with Duke's B3 or C colon cancer.
