PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of raltitrexed and fluorouracil in treating patients who have colorectal cancer that is metastatic, recurrent, or cannot be surgically removed.

Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug with gefitinib may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of gefitinib and oxaliplatin combined with leucovorin and fluorouracil in treating patients who have advanced solid tumors or colorectal cancer.

It is not yet known which regimen of combination chemotherapy is most effective in treating advanced colorectal cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of various combination chemotherapy regimens in treating patients who have advanced, recurrent, or metastatic colorectal cancer that cannot be treated with surgery or radiation therapy.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as irinotecan, fluorouracil, and leucovorin, work in different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Combining more than one chemotherapy drug with radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving combination chemotherapy together with radiation therapy works in treating patients with stage III or stage IV colorectal carcinoma (cancer), other refractory carcinoma (cancer), or metastatic adenocarcinoma (cancer) of unknown primary origin.
