Adherence to LPV in SICU and Associated Clinical Outcomes
AdultGuideline Adherence6 moreLung Protective Ventilation strategy (LPV) with low tidal volume and adequate positive end-expiratory pressure is recommended for not only patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) but also those without ARDS too. From previous studies, adherence to LPV strategy reported is only 40% and data is limited in surgical patients. The investigators aim to describe ventilation management and find out the adherence rate to LPV strategy applied to surgical patients admitted to the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) and their associated outcomes.
Postoperative Complications Following Total Knee Arthroplasty
ArthroplastyReplacement1 moreThe aim of this study is to investigate the effect of combined spinoepidural and general anesthesia on the incidence of postoperative complications following total knee arthroplasty
Effect Of Delta Sodium on the Postoperative Outcomes in Liver Transplant Recipients
Liver Transplant; ComplicationsPerioperative/Postoperative Complications1 moreWe analyzed the association of delta sodium levels with their effect on post liver transplant outcomes in consecutive patients undergoing liver transplantation. Records were analyzed for electrolytes and outcome measures, and data was analyzed.
Comparative Effectiveness of Peripheral Nerve Blocks for Outpatient Shoulder Surgery
Postoperative ComplicationsThis retrospective, population-based cohort study will evaluate the comparative effectiveness of peripheral nerve blocks on patient outcomes after ambulatory shoulder surgery in adults patients undergoing surgery in Ottawa, Ontario.
ERAS vs Conventional Approach in Peptic Perforation-RCT
Peptic Ulcer PerforationPerforated Bowel3 moreThis study compares 2 different ways of perioperative management in patients of peptic perforation. Experimental arm is the ERAS arm( Enhanced recovery after surgery) and the comparative arm is Conventional arm.
Procalcitonin and Postoperative Outcome After Open-heart Surgery
Open Heart SurgeryCardiopulmonary Bypass5 moreThe aim of this study was to investigate the impact of serum values of procalcitonin (PCT), C-reactive protein (CRP) and lactate to predict postoperative complications in the early postoperative period after open-heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
Colonization of Bile Ducts and Postoperative Infectious Complications of Pancreaticoduodenectomies...
Pancreatic CancerSepsis9 moreThe aim of the present prospective study was, first, to verify the correlation between biliary colonization and postoperative infectious complications, and secondarily to asses morbidity and mortality for patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy. The hypothesis is that a proportion of post-operative infections after pancreaticoduodenectomy is due to bacteria that colonize the bile ducts during the preoperative period.
Crystalloids vs Albumin Prime Solution and Postoperative Pulmonary Complications
Postoperative ComplicationsIn 2019, the investigators initiated a new priming fluid therapy strategy in the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine for patients undergoing pulmonary endarterectomy surgery. It consisted in a transition from a "pure" primarly balanced crystalloid priming fluid strategy to a 4% human albumin priming fluid-strategy in addition to a low volume of balanced crystalloid solution. The rationale was the theoritical assumption that albumin leads to better intravascular volume expansion compared to crystalloid and therefore could reduce overall volume requirement during surgery and consequently potentially decrease the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications. The objective of this propensity-matched study was to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention
The Impact of Transanal Decompression Tube Placement After Colorectal Anastomosis: A Randomized...
Colorectal CancerPostoperative Complications2 moreThere is currently no standardization in the use of the transanal decompressive tube during the postoperative after a colorectal surgery. The available evidence is based on studies with methodological differences. Most of the studies exclude patients with a diverting ileostomy, which are those patients who have a higher risk of anastomotic leak, so the real effect of transanal decompressive tube could have been masked. For this reason we believe that to assess the true effect of rectal decompression, patients with diverting stoma should be included.
An African, Multi-centre Evaluation of Patient Care and Clinical Outcomes for Paediatric Patients...
Paediatric SurgeryPerioperative/Postoperative Complications7 moreAccess to safe surgery is a basic human right. This is highlighted by the work of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery. There is a large burden of surgical disease in the paediatric surgical population with a large unmet need. In Africa, children comprise a significant proportion of the population with approximately 50% of the population being ≤19 years old. Limited data from Africa suggests the risk factors for, incidence and outcomes associated with paediatric surgical complications differ from HICs. The African Surgical Outcomes Study (ASOS) has described surgical outcomes in adult patients in Africa. There is a need to determine the burden of the complications in paediatric surgical patients in Africa, and the risk factors for and the type of complications experienced. Once this study is completed, the investigators will be able to target appropriate interventions to improve surgical outcomes for children in Africa. The investigators have the capacity to do this important work, through the African Perioperative Research Group (APORG) group.
