MR, Myocardial Infarct and Heart Failure
Heart FailureCongestiveKoMPiS is a contrast aided cardiac magnetic resonance study of microvascular obstruction and left ventricular remodelling following acute revascularised anterior myocardial infarction. The study will monitor the included patients for 12 months following the acute myocardial infarct and collect data from MR scans and blood samples. The study is designed to demonstrate that obstruction of blood flow in the peripheral (small) vessels of the cardiac muscle is an important factor in the post-MI development of left ventricle dysfunction that occurs in many patients, despite of a successful re-opening of the occluded coronary artery that caused the MI.
Heart Failure and a Preserved Ejection Fraction
Heart FailureThis will be a cross sectional study comparing patients with HFpEF and age-matched, non-HF controls recruited from the community. This design will allow for determination of biologically relevant differences in baseline ventricular and vascular function, and importantly, differences in the ability to augment ventricular and vascular function dynamically during exercise stress, when symptoms of HF typically are first noted. The endpoint of exercise-reserve function is novel and has been little examined in the existing HFpEF literature.
Screening Evaluation of the Evolution of New Heart Failure (SCREEN-HF)
Heart FailureThe investigators are hoping to identify early heart failure in patients who do not have symptoms as yet and at the same time assess the usefulness of Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) in doing this.
PARTNERS HF: Program to Access and Review Trending Information and Evaluate Correlation to Symptoms...
Heart FailureCongestiveThe purpose of this study is to determine the value of diagnostic data obtained from Medtronic implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) with cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) to evaluate cardiovascular and heart failure related adverse events and health care utilization.
Heart Failure, Functional and Cognitive Decline, and Psychiatric Symptoms in Nursing Home Patients...
Heart FailureCongestiveHeart failure is very common in the elderly, in whom it may lead to functional and intellectual problems. Functional problems include loss in the ability to perform basic tasks of daily living such as bathing or dressing. No studies have yet described the rate at which heart failure causes these problems to develop. This study aims to find out whether nursing home patients deteriorate more quickly with respect to function and intellect if they have heart failure. Participants will undergo a thorough health history and physical examination and will be followed every 3 months for up to a year. Over 30 nursing homes in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Hamilton, in South Central Ontario (Canada), are participating in this study. Every 3 months, participants will be reviewed with respect to function, intellect, mood and behaviours. Results between those with heart failure will be compared to those of people without heart failure. The results of this study will be used to plan further studies to see whether good treatment of heart failure can preserve function, intellect, and prevent depression and other mood problems.
Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (Intermacs)
Cardiovascular DiseasesHeart Diseases2 moreThe Intermacs registry is a national quality improvement system designed to advance the understanding and application of mechanical circulatory support in order to improve the duration and quality of life in patients with advanced heart failure.
BNP Testing in Patients With SOB on Presentation to ED
Heart FailureCongestiveA trial to examine whether a new heart failure blood test can improve the outcome of patients presenting to the Emergency Department with shortness of breath. We hypothesise that a BNP test performed in real-time in patients presenting to the Emergency Department with shortness of breath will help identify additional patients with CHF and consequently to change practice and allow more patients to recieve correct treatment earlier.
Does Telephone Follow-up Improve Patients Satisfaction
Congestive Heart FailureAngina Pectoris2 moreSeveral studies have shown the importance of Telephone follow-up in reducing hospital readmissions for heart failure. Therefore, we aimed in this cohort to investigate whether telephone follow-up with patients discharged from the general internal department improves patients' satisfaction, increases compliance to treatment and reduces adverse effects. Patients are recruited from the department of general internal medicine who gave informed consent and could communicate. Patients are interviewed by during hospital stay, one and three months later. This group will be compared with patients that are not interviewd by phone aftert hospital discharge.
Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC)
AtherosclerosisCoronary Disease7 moreTo measure associations of established and suspected coronary heart disease risk factors with both atherosclerosis and new coronary heart disease events in representative cohorts from four diverse United States communities. To compare the communities with respect to risk factors, medical care, atherosclerosis, and coronary heart disease incidence. ARIC has two components in each community: study of representative cohorts of adult men and women, and community surveillance of morbidity and mortality.
Prevalence of Asymptomatic Ventricular Dysfunction
Cardiovascular DiseasesHeart Diseases3 moreTo conduct a population-based study of the prevalence of asymptomatic ventricular dysfunction.
