Nutrition and Constipation at Inguinal Hernia Patients
NutritionConstipation1 moreThere are lots of inguinal hernia risk factors determined in the literature. But the relationship between nutritional status and inguinal hernia were not examined yet. In this study the investigators evaluated the constipation scale and food consumption of the inguinal hernia patients. This Case-Control study was performed between March 2018- March 2019. The patients who admitted for operation with inguinal hernia were the case group (n:115) and the patients who were admitted to the same hospital without inguinal hernia were control group (n:88). The age, body mass index, alcohol and smoking habits, daily activity, frequency of food consumption and the Wexner constipation scoring were examined using questionnaire were noted.
Fiber Formula Study Among Radiation Oncology Patients
ConstipationDuring radiation treatment for head and neck cancer a large percentage of patients at Mayo Clinic Rochester develop the need for tube feeding to meet nutrition and hydration needs. These patients are usually taking pain medication along with a stool softener or laxative. Currently, when these patients get a feeding tube it is our standard practice to choose a fiber-free enteral tube feeding formula as to not worsen their constipation. Currently, there are no guidelines as to which patients are good candidates for fiber containing enteral tube feeding formulas. The investigators hope this study will help determine if fiber containing enteral tube feeding formulas can be used for patients undergoing radiation for head and neck cancer without increasing rates of constipation or increasing use of stool softeners/laxatives. Hypothesis: Participants enrolled in the study will not have increased rates of constipation on fiber-containing enteral tube feeding formula compared to historical standards on fiber-free formula.

Constipation AggravatedFecal Incontinence With Fecal UrgencyBackground: Antegrade colonic enema (ACE) is a second intent treatment of severe constipation and/or fecal incontinence following the failure of medical treatment. ACE is classically administered through a percutaneous access to the caecum performed surgically according to the Malone procedure (MP). Recently, a novel endoscopic approach named Percutaneous Endoscopic Caecostomy (PEC) has been proposed to perform the percutaneous access to the caecum. PEC has never been compared to the traditional MP in terms of postoperative quality of life and functional outcomes. Objective: The aim of the study is to compare postoperative quality of life between MP and PEC in patients treated with ACE for severe constipation and/or fecal incontinence. Hypothesis: MP and PEC achieve similar quality of life outcomes. Methods: All patients from two prospective databases who underwent MP or PEC for severe constipation and/or fecal incontinence between 2006 and 2016 will be included. They will be contacted to answer questionnaires about quality of life (GIQLI) and functional outcomes including constipation, fecal incontinence and body image assessment (KESS, Wexner and BIQ scores respectively). The main measured outcome will be GIQLI score. Results: The results of this comparative study will determine if the endoscopic and the surgical approaches are similar in terms of quality of life, or if one of them is better than the other. This study will clarify the optimal protocol to perform a caecal percutaneous access before ACE administration in patients suffering from severe constipation and/or fecal incontinence.
Longitudinal Study of Patients With Opioid-Induced Constipation
Patients With Opioid Induced ConstipationThis prospective hybrid longitudinal study was conducted in the United States (US), Canada, the United Kingdom (UK), and Germany. To obtain the most complete and comprehensive understanding of the burden of opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in these countries, this study used a combination of web-based, longitudinal patient survey, retrospective data abstraction from medical records, and a prospective physician survey. The primary objective of this study was to estimate the rate of inadequate response to laxatives (LIR), which was defined as having sufficient laxative use (at least one laxative use ≥ four times per reference period), and inadequate response (defined as fewer than three bowel movements (BMs) OR at least one of the following symptoms on the Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptoms (PAC-SYM) measure scored as moderate, severe or very severe: BMs too hard, straining to have a BM, feeling like you didn't "finish" a BM, and feeling like you had to pass a BM but could not), in a cohort of non-cancer pain and cancer pain (separately) participants with OIC, by country and overall. The secondary study objectives are as follows: To estimate the rate of LIR for two subgroups: 1xLIR and 2xLIR. 1xLIR was defined as use of at least one laxative agent ≥ 4 times in the reference period while 2xLIR was defined as the use of at least two laxative agents, each used ≥ 4 times in the reference period; To describe the baseline demographic and clinical characteristics, including prior health status, comorbidities, constipation-related GI symptoms, and concomitant medications of patients with OIC; To describe drug utilization and self-management of OIC; To describe the pre-index and post-index healthcare resource utilization and estimate costs associated with the diagnosis, treatment, and general management of OIC (including laxative use) and events attributed to OIC, including both direct and indirect costs; To describe patient-reported impact of OIC on health-related quality of life, productivity, and pain management; To describe patient-reported treatment satisfaction with laxative use; and To describe physician-reported awareness of OIC and symptoms and understanding of patient-reported impact of OIC.
