Breathing Techniques and Meditation for Health Care Workers During COVID-19 Pandemic

This phase I trial investigates breathing techniques and meditation for health care workers during COVID-19 pandemic. Breathing techniques and medication may help manage stress and improve lung health. The goal of this trial is to learn if breathing techniques and meditation may help to reduce stress and improve lung health in health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Evidence has shown that COVID-19 infections can lead to an increased risk of blood clots. These blood clots can lead to individuals being admitted to hospital, or, unfortunately in severe cases, death. Enoxaparin is a blood-thinning drug which has been used by doctors and nurses in hospitals for many years to prevent the thickening of blood which may lead to a clot. It is easier for doctors to prevent new blood clots from forming than treating existing blood clots. Currently, there are no treatments for COVID-19. There is an urgent need to find a safe and effective treatment to prevent worsening of the disease that may lead to hospital admission and/or death. The ETHIC (Early Thromboprophylaxis in COVID-19) study aims to find out if giving enoxaparin in an early stage of the COVID-19 disease can prevent individuals being admitted to hospital and/or death. The study will take place in approximately 8 to 10 countries, in approximately 30 to 50 centres. Patients will be allowed to take part if they have had a confirmed COVID-19 infection, are ≥ 55 years of age and have at least two of the following additional risk factors; age ≥ 70 years, body mass index > 25 kg/m2, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or corticosteroid use. Half the patients in the study will receive the blood-thinning drug enoxaparin for three weeks, and half will receive no treatment. Individuals will be randomly allocated to one of these groups. After 21 days, the number of patients in each group who were either admitted to hospital, or died, will be compared. The number of patients in each group who developed a blood clot (venous thromboembolism) will also be compared. Further comparisons will be made at both 50 and 90 days after the beginning of the study.

It is our hypothesis that a course of Ta1 administered to hospitalized individuals with COVID-19 infection and lymphocytopenia will improve the time to recovery (primary objective) and severity of infection (secondary objectives) compared to untreated individuals in the same hospital with comparable lymphocytopenia. After screening, hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and lymphocytopenia who meet the inclusion criteria will receive Ta1 (1.6 mg) administered subcutaneously (SC) daily for 1 week. Individuals in the control arm will be followed on the identical protocol but will not receive daily Ta1.

Recent studies have shown that some individuals may be asymptomatic but continue to shed the COVID-19 virus. These individuals may represent a population that can unknowingly transmit the virus. Healthcare workers (HCW) may acquire COVID-19 from the community or from possibly infected patients. It is important to gather data with respect to this to further understand the prevalence of asymptomatic carriage in individuals who work in research facilities, offices and clinical areas of hospitals and research facilities/institutes since this has important implications for infection control, as well as staff and patient safety. The purpose of this study is to test whether a proportion of these individuals may be asymptomatic shedders of the COVID-19 virus.

The COVA clinical study is a global multicentric, double-blind, placebo-controlled, group sequential and adaptive 2 parts phase 2-3 study targeting in patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. Part 1 is a Phase 2 exploratory Proof of Concept (PoC) study to provide preliminary data on the activity, safety and tolerability of BIO101 in the target population. Part 2 is a phase 3 pivotal randomized study to provide further evidence of safety and efficacy of BIO101 after 28 days of double-blind dosing. BIO101 is the investigational new drug that activates the Mas receptor (MasR) through the protective arm of the Renin Angiotensin System (RAS).

Tannins based wood extracts are an inexpensive and safe product with protective effect in both bacterial and viral infections likely due to its anti- inflammatory, anti-oxidative effects and their modulation of the intestinal microbiota. This randomized controlled trial seeks to evaluate the efficacy of the tannins based dietary supplement ARBOX in positive COVID-19 patients.
