Role of OMT in the Management of the Persistent Post-COVID-19 Symptoms

Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome

The goal of this observational study is to determine the feasibility of conducting a large-scale study on the effect of using osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to treat patients with post-COVID-19 symptoms. The main questions it aims to answer are: Is it feasible to conduct a large-scale study of the effect of OMT on patients with post-COVID-19 symptoms (based on how many patients agree to participate and how many complete the study)? How much change in patients' post-COVID-19 symptom severity, quality of life, and ability to return to work can we expect to see following OMT? Participants will receive OMT as directed by their physician and complete questionnaires after every other OMT session. Participants will complete questionnaires about their post-COVID-19 symptoms, quality of life, ability to return to work, and adverse events they experienced 3 days after every other OMT session. Participants will be sent links to the questionnaires for 4 months or when their symptoms resolve, whichever comes first. Additionally, participants will complete a follow-up questionnaire 2 months after they stop receiving OMT for their post-COVID-19 symptoms or 6 months after enrollment in the study, whichever comes first.

ARVAC-A New Recombinant Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Vaccine

COVID-19 Vaccine

The goals of this clinical trial are: Phase 2: to test a gamma adapted recombinant vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 in healthy adult volunteers, previously vaccinated against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Phase 3 (first volunteer enrollement on March 25, 2023): to test a recombinant vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 comparing three different versions (Gamma Variant RBD-based ARVAC-CG vaccine, Omicron Variant RBD-based ARVAC-CG vaccine, Bivariant Gamma/Omicron RBD-based ARVAC-CG vaccine), in adult volunteers previously vaccinated against the SARS-CoV-2 virus The main questions to be answered are: Phase 2: What si the immune response after one dose of vaccine? What is the safety and tolerability profile of this vaccine? Phase 3 : What is the immune response triggered by each vaccine formulation against Wuhan, gamma, and omicron variants. What is the safety and tolerability profile of this vaccine? In phase 2, participants will receive one dose of the study vaccine and one dose of placebo 28 days apart, in a cross-over design. In phase 3 (not yet recruitment), participants will be randomized to receive one of the three possible types of vaccines and all of them will receive one dose of the corresponding vaccine and 1 dose of placebo 28 days apart, in a cross over design.

The Impact of COVID-19 Infection on the Symptoms of Functional Dyspepsia

Dyspepsia

Although respiratory symptoms were predominant in patients infected with COVID-19, gastrointestinal symptoms were always reported in about 10% patients. Previous studies demonstrated that the SARS-CoV-2 virus still persists in stool samples for a long time after initial infection. Moreover, some patients had a longer duration of COVID-19-related gastrointestinal symptoms, which was defined as "post-acute COVID-19 syndrome". Previous studies have shown that functional gastrointestinal disorders may occur after acute gastroenteritis. Functional dyspepsia (FD) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders. FD was reported to be correlated with multiple pathophysiological mechanisms, including GI bacterial imbalance, disordered gut microbiota, and disturbed barrier and immune function. It is unknown whether COVID-19 infection could exacerbate the symptoms of FD. Therefore, we followed up a group of FD patients before and after COVID-19 and investigate the impact of COVID-19 infection on the symptoms of FD.

Commonly employed medications used in critically ill patients requiring life support include proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These medications are thought to prevent gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding from stress-induced ulceration. Despite their widespread use, they do hold some risks which include infection in the form of pneumonia and diarrheal illnesses such as Clostridioides difficile infection (C. difficile). Emerging high-quality studies suggest PPI usage does not influence susceptibility to COVID-19 infection, however some studies suggest PPI use leads to poor outcomes in this population, including prolonged time on life-support and death. While we can appreciate the negative effects of PPI may be magnified in the sickest of patients, namely hospitalized patients with COVID-19, the beneficial or potentially harmful role they play in this population remains unclear. We aim to build a clinical profile to further describe critically ill patients with COVID-19 in Ontario using the infrastructure of an ongoing multicenter clinical trial of acid suppression. We will identify characteristics that predict poor outcomes among sick COVID patients, examining the impact of PPIs on this population.

Coronavirus infection has an impact on several aspects of everyday life including the levels of Physical Activity (PA). Investigators wish to (1) detect changes on PA levels in recovered SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) adults compared to the pre-infection levels and (2) identify a potential relationship between changes of PA levels and pre-illness vaccination profile along with individual's number of infection/reinfections. It is assumed that the impact of COVID-19 infection on PA would be more pronounced in cases of repeated infections and/or in the unvaccinated compared to the vaccinated individuals against COVID-19.

Effectiveness of Testofen Compared to Placebo on Long COVID Symptoms

This is a double blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate orally-dosed Testofen (a specialised extract of Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) seed) compared to placebo on post COVID-19 symptoms in otherwise healthy participants 18 years and over.
