Gondola Mechanism of Action
Chronic StrokeCerebral Palsy1 moreThis study will investigate the clinical, functional and neurophysiological effects of automated mechanical peripheral stimulation (AMPS) via the Gondola device administered to patients with chronic stroke, cerebral palsy and Parkinson's Disease. Results will be collected using standardized outcome measures and a transcranial magnetic stimulation assessment protocol including electrical stimulation and electromyographic recording.
Effects of Flywheel Exercise on Muscle and Walking Function in Teenagers and Young Adults With Cerebral...
Cerebral PalsyThe main purpose of this project is to improve physical function and muscle health in teenagers and young adults with cerebral palsy (CP) by using an eccentric-overload resistance exercise model Specific aims To compare the efficacy of eccentric-overload vs. weight stack resistance exercise in inducing muscle, functional and gait performance adaptations in teenagers with CP. To increase force, power and muscle mass in the lower limbs of patients with cerebral palsy. To improve gross motor function, balance and gait through eccentric-overload resistance exercise in teenagers suffering from cerebral palsy. We hypothesize that the time-effective flywheel resistance exercise paradigm will result in greater gains in muscle mass and function in teenagers with CP, when compared with conventional weight-stack technology. Importantly, we believe these adaptations will be translated into enhanced gross motor function, balance and gait performance. Forty teenagers and young adults (age range 16-23 yr) with spastic CP will be recruited. They will be randomly assigned to flywheel (FL; n=20) or weight-stack (WS; n=20) resistance exercise. During 8 weeks, all the teenagers will follow a standard resistance exercise training program within the Stockholm Habilitation Center system. In addition, patients will perform either flywheel (FL group) or conventional (WS group) leg press resistance exercise twice per week. Muscle force, power and activity (electromyography; EMG), leg extension lag, co-contraction, balance, functional mobility, gait quality, and muscle and fat thickness of lower extremities are assessed in all patients before and after the 8-week intervention (Fig. 1).
Ankle-foot Orthoses for Night Splinting in Children With CP: Impact on Passive Stiffness in Plantarflexors...
Cerebral PalsyChildren with cerebral palsy present early in the childhood altered muscular properties, characterized by short muscle belly length and increased stiffness which contribute to contracture and limiting joint range of motion. In order to prevent equinus deformity, ankle foot orthoses for night splinting are usually used in children with spastic Cerebral Palsy (CP). However, there's a lack of proof about efficacy by using this modality of treatment. Moreover, impact on quality of life for children and families, cost for society were high. Principal purpose of this study was to assess impact of night splint ankle foot orthoses on passive stiffness in plantarflexors muscles in children with CP.
Weight Abnormalities With Diet and Exercise Frequency in Egyptian Children With Cerebral Palsy
ObesityChildhood4 moreThe goal of this study was to find prevalence and correlations of different weight abnormalities and risk of abdominal obesity in a random sample of Egyptian children suffering from cerebral palsy. This cross- sectional study hypothesize the prevalence of weight abnormalities and risk of abdominal obesity in addition to positive correlations between weight abnormalities and number of exercise hours and frequency of meals in a random sample of Egyptian children suffering from cerebral palsy RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the prevalence of weight abnormalities and and risk of abdominal obesity in Egyptian children with cerebral palsy? Does the weight abnormalities correlates with number of exercise hours or frequency of meals in children with cerebral palsy?
Correlation Between Body Mass Index, Selective Motor Control and Functional Ability in Children...
Diplegic Cerebral PalsyPURPOSE: To investigate the correlations between body mass index, spasticity, functional ability and isolated motor control in children with spastic diplegia. BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy is primarily a disorder of movement and posture HYPOTHESES: There is no correlation between body mass index, spasticity, functional ability and isolated motor control in children with spastic diplegia. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is there a correlation between body mass index, spasticity, functional ability and isolated motor control in children with spastic diplegia?
Turkish Adaptation Of GMFCS Family Report And The Agreement Of Family and Physiotherapist
Cerebral PalsyTo make the Turkish adaptation of the Gross Motor Function Classification System Family Report (GMFCS-FR) in children with CP, to determine its reliability and validity, and to investigate the agreement of the family and the clinical physiotherapists in determining the gross motor function level.
Minimizing Complications in Scoliosis Surgery in Children With Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral PalsyBackground: Posterior spinal fusion (PSF) in children with cerebral palsy (CP) carries a high risk of complications and mortality. Complication rates have been reported as high as 45%, and infection rates typically reported at 15%. Efforts to improve efficiency by reducing operative time and blood loss could decrease these risks. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of utilizing two attending surgeons on blood loss, operative time, and complications in this population. Methods: This is a prospective, matched cohort analysis with a consecutive series of patients with CP who underwent PSF, with two attending surgeons, in 2012. These are matched with a control group that had a single-surgeon team (operative dates 2008-2010), assisted by a resident, PA, or RN-FA. The groups are compared using paired Student T-tests and chi square tests (significance set a p<0.05).
Chewing Disorders, Gross Motor Function and Trunk Control in Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral PalsyThe study is planned to determine the relationship between chewing performance level and gross motor function, and trunk postural control in cerebral palsy (CP).
Controlling Femoral Derotation Osteotomy With Electromagnetic Tracking
Interna Rotation GaitCerebral Palsy2 moreThe study is designed to evaluate the use of electromagnetic tracking in femoral derotation osteotomies. The goal is to raise the precision of the surgical procedure in order to improve the outcome in short- and long term. The electromagnetic tracking system is evaluated against a base line CT scan serving as reference standard.
