Header Burden in Football (Soccer)

To assess the realistic magnitude of the header burden in children's and youth' football in eight European countries. In a cross-sectional observational design, one match of 60 different teams in each of the eight European countries were monitored via video recording throughout the second half of the regular season 2017/18 and the first half of the regular season 2018/19. Clubs with (female, male, or mixed) Under-10, Under-12 and female and male Under-16 teams were invited to participate. Header frequencies and types were analysed using standardized heading registration forms. Additionally, head injuries were recorded using standardized head injury registration forms.

Computed Tomography Perfusion in Patients With Severe Head Injury

Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of post-injury hospitalization, disability, and death worldwide. In Nova Scotia, approximately 50% of major trauma reported is head trauma. TBI is predicted to be the most common and expensive neurological condition in Canada through the year 2031. Families and medical teams must often decide on the appropriate level of care for patients with severe TBI and frequently need to consider withdrawal of life support measures. These decisions have implications for patients with severe TBI, costs to the health care system, and rates of organ donation. A reliable method for neurological evaluation at the time of the patient's arrival to the hospital is important, because it is possible that many patients with severe TBI already have permanent brain damage. Assessing this brain damage with clinical tests is difficult because of the nature of patients' injuries and the sedative medication they receive at the time of their hospital admission. Current standard imaging technique for these patients is severely limited in the assessment of the extent and severity of the brain damage. Advanced diagnostic imaging, called Computed Tomography Perfusion (CTP), can help detect permanent brain damage. However, CTP of the head is not currently done for patients with severe TBI when they arrive at the hospital. The investigators want to test whether CTP of the head can detect permanent brain damage among patients with severe TBI.

Whole-Body MRI in Suspected Victims of Abusive Head Trauma

Shaken Baby Syndrome

The purpose: to pilot whole-body MRI scanning in infants who are already getting brain MRI for suspected child abuse Research design: prospective, blinded reading of Whole-Body MRI (WB-MRI) images during the routine care of the hospitalized infant with comparison to routine radiographic skeletal survey images Procedures to be used: whole-body MRI images Risks and potential benefits: no additional risk (the infant will be receiving and MRI of their brain as part of routine care, the additional images will be obtained at the same time without additional sedation); benefits to the infant include the identification of injuries which would have otherwise been missed by routine care importance of knowledge that may reasonably be expected to result: results from this study will potentially influence the use of radiographic skeletal survey and decrease the radiation exposure to infants being evaluated for suspected child abuse.

The purpose of this study is to find out how many helmeted versus non-helmeted motorcycle accident victims (MCA) sustain head and/or face injuries. Also, we will find out how much it costs to get medical care for head and face injuries in helmeted versus non-helmeted motorcycle victims. Finally, we will compare how long it takes helmeted versus non-helmeted motorcycle victims with face and head injuries to return to work.

Background / Rationale at. The mild head injury. In France, the incidence of head injuries is estimated at 100,000 per year in France. 80% of mild head trauma. This is a pattern of frequent use of the health system. The reason for consultation, benign appearance, present a significant risk of complication. In 15 to 25% of the evolution of head injury is unfavorable. Disorders of attention, memory disorders, psychiatric events and mood changes may occur. These symptoms are grouped into a syndrome, post-concussion syndrome. The post-concussion syndrome: It affects approximately 20,000 people per year in France. This is a common disease and most undervalued in the general population. diagnostic criteria post-concussional disorder according to DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual). Symptoms may persist for more than 3 months after head injury. This syndrome is responsible for suffering, personal and professional sound and quality of life of patients. It is particularly debilitating in everyday life, and can have disastrous consequences on their family, social, cultural and professional. It gives rise to many financial implications with compensation requirements and expertise consultations. Intention of work In a recent study by a team of neuropsychologists Kremlin Bicetre, it has been shown that screening and early treatment of post-concussion syndrome from the slight head injury prevents chronicity of symptoms.
