Alternate Run Study

Overuse Injury

The proposed study will investigate the effect of alternating footwear model and workout-type on the occurrence of running-related pain. To achieve this goal participants will be randomly assigned into one of four different groups who will perform: 1) the same workout throughout a week in the same running shoe model, 2) alternating workout-types throughout the week in the same shoe model, 3) the same workout throughout a week in alternating shoe models, and 4) alternating workouts in alternating shoes. Participants will be characterized based on body alignment, strength, injury and training history. Pain and injury status will be monitored.

Insoles in Prevention of Lower Limb Injuries

Lower Limb Overuse Injuries

To address whether custom made foot insoles could be used for primary prevention of lower limb overuse injuries, the investigators conducted a prospective, randomized controlled study comparing the use of insoles and standard shoes in healthy young adults exposed to increased physical activity.

Research Protocol for Karuna Labs Inc.: Safety and Efficacy of Virtual Reality Graded Motor Imagery...

Chronic PainLow Back Pain7 more

The purpose of this study is to investigate, in two phases: (1) the feasibility and safety of Virtual Embodiment Therapy in treating chronic pain of lower back and upper limbs and (2) the efficacy of Virtual Embodiment Therapy on chronic pain disorders of the lower back and upper limbs. In phase 1, we will investigate the feasibility, safety, and side effects related to this treatment by assessing simulator sickness. In phase 2, which in contingent on successful completion of phase 1, we will assess symptoms of pain specific to the region treated, fear and avoidance behavior, and depression symptoms before and after 8 sessions of treatment with Virtual Embodiment Therapy in order to assess efficacy. This study will be single-blinded, because the participation of the clinician is necessary to ensure proper administration of the therapy, as well as to monitor in the event of adverse reactions.

Step Rate Retraining to Reduce Injury and Disability (STRIDe)

Overuse InjuryLower Extremity Problem4 more

This study will be the first project to evaluate the effectiveness of wearable technology (Garmin Forerunner35) while performing gait retraining in field on military members. The watch will provide real time feedback to the runner on their step rate while performing running sessions outside of the lab. This allows the runner to modify their step rate to meet a recommended step rate provided by the study team member. Aim 1: To demonstrate the utility of wearable sensors to modify running step rate through real time biofeedback. Aim 2: To determine whether altering step rate using real time biofeedback reduces lower extremity musculoskeletal injury reoccurrence within 1 year post training.

Throwing Device Trial

Overuse Injury

The primary objective of this study is to collect motion-capture data on movements common to baseball play in order to develop an algorithm for a wearable device for the prevention and rehabilitation of sports-related overuse injuries. Secondary objectives include evaluating the feasibility of wearing the throwing device during simulated baseball play.

Developing an Instrument to Measure Personal Keyboarding Style

Cumulative Trauma Disorders

This study will develop and refine an observational assessment tool called the Personal Computer Keyboard Style (PeCKS). When completed this assessment tool will provide researchers and clinicians with a valid and reliable method to describe computer keyboarding postures and kinematics. The proposed study will be divided into two phases. Phase I will be devoted to developing and refining an instrument, the Pre-PeCKS, into a valid and reliable data gathering observational tool. In Phase II the Pre-PeCKS will be used to develop a predictive model that can discriminate between those with and without MSD-UE. The model developed will be used to select the construction and weighting of the subscales of the final instrument, the PeCKS. Phase I - PeCKS psychometrics - reliability and validity Specific Aim 1: To evaluate inter- and intra-rater reliability and the concurrent criterion-related validity of the Pre-PeCKS. H.1.1 The Pre-PeCKS will demonstrate acceptable reliability for the following tests: H.1.1a. Intra-rater reliability (stability within one rater) H.1.1b. Inter-rater reliability (stability across raters) H.1.1c. Test of internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) (stability across items) H.1.2 The Pre-PeCKS will demonstrate good concurrent criterion-related validity - Parameters selected by raters using the Pre-PeCKS will significantly correlate with biomechanical measures (VICON™ motion recording and analysis system and force plate): H.1.2.a. Angles and displacements identified by raters using the Pre-PeCKS will correlate with angles and displacements measured by the VICON™ motion recording and analysis system; H.1.2.b. Number of times spent performing actions as specified by raters using the Pre-PeCKS will correlate with number of times measured by a VICON™ motion recording and analysis system; H.1.2.c. Level of forceful keying as specified by raters using the Pre-PeCKS will correlate with levels of forceful keying measured with a force plate under the keyboard. Phase II - PeCKS psychometrics - diagnostic tool development Specific Aim 2: To use information gathered using the Pre-PeCKS to develop a diagnostic instrument that can identify those with and without MSD-UE. The major hypothesis related to Specific Aim 2 is: H.2.1. Using information gathered with the Pre-PeCKS and knowing the disease outcome of the subjects, predictive models can be developed that discriminate between those who do and do not have MSD-UE.

Relationship Between Dysfunctions of Movement in the Lower Back and Pelvis With Overuse Injuries...

Dysfunction;JointOveruse Injury

The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between the presence of overuse injuries and failure to control of movement in those areas. For this, participants will perform some tests related to movement dysfunction lumbar-pelvic area to check for faults in one or more movement planes.
