Speech Recognition Training in Children With Hearing Loss

Hearing Loss

clEAR's auditory brain training has been shown to be effective in improving childrens' abilities to recognize the speech of generic talkers in a laboratory setting. In the proposed research, the researchers will build upon these results and assess the extent to which auditory brain training delivered via the web enhances children's abilities to recognize the speech of a potential classroom teacher and diminishes their communication challenges that are associated with significant hearing loss. First, investigators will conduct focus groups with children who have undergone training with the research version of clEAR's pediatric games, then they will recode the games from LabView to Java Script, making changes in the games in response to the focus group comments, and finally, they will collect data from 20 children to assess whether web-based auditory brain training improves their abilities to recognize the speech of their (hypothetical) upcoming school year's classroom teacher.

Analysis of Parental Support in Families Using the LENA After Early Cochlear Implantation

Profound Congenital DeafnessCochlear Implantation

The language environment that influences the child's language development has been studied using different subjective tools, mainly audio and/or video recording and manual transcriptions. The linguistic results of the implanted deaf child are dependent on the age at the implant, but also on the auditory and linguistic stimulation in the first months following the placement of the implant. Parents are the main actors in the child's language development. Professionals can rely on the LENA tool: Language ENvironment Analysis, which objectifies the language environment of the child at home in his daily environment. It is possible to obtain statistics on the number of adult words received by the child, the number of words produced by the child as well as the exposure to media and noise. On the basis of this quantitative data, the family can be supported in an attempt to optimize the conditions for receiving their child's speech. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of speech therapy parental support using the data provided by the Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) tool, in a pediatric population implanted early, i.e. before the age of 18 months and aged under 24 months inclusive at the start of their participation in the study.

Real-time Artificial Intelligence-based Speech Enhancement Methods for Hearing Aid Improvement

Deafness Neurosensory

Individuals with Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorders (ANSD) represent 1-10% of adults with hearing loss. These individuals have little or no benefit from current hearing aids because ANSD is a continuum of hearing impairments due to synaptic or neural dysfunction in the peripheral and central parts of the auditory pathways, which impairs temporal information processing without necessarily affecting auditory sensitivity. There is a need to find ad-hoc denoising methods, based on the expert knowledge of audiologists, to improve the noise comprehension performance of these patients. Implemented denoising methods, based on artificial intelligence, will also greatly benefit more standard hearing loss cases.

PRINCE22 System Complete Performance Study

Hearing LossBilateral2 more

The investigation proposes to compare a narrow reference beamformer to a novel beamformer approach, when the talker is not in front of the hearing aid user and in the presence of background noise. The beamformer effect will be determined in terms of speech intelligibility, listening effort and ability to multitask when the talkers are located on the side or in the back.

Auditory Midbrain Implant Study

Deafness; Perception

The objectives of the clinical study are to implant five deaf patients (those with Neurofibromatosis Type II, NF2) with a new two-shank auditory midbrain implant array (AMI; developed by Cochlear Limited) into the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus in order to assess the safety, reliability, consistency of placement, and performance of the AMI device. The clinical trial is being performed at Hannover Medical School in Germany in collaboration with University of Minnesota (USA) and Cochlear Limited (Australia). The clinical trial is being managed by Hannover Clinical Trial Center in Germany.
