Direct-to-Consumer Hearing Aids and Listening Effort

Hearing LossHearing Loss3 more

The aim of this proposed project is to understand whether direct to consumer (DTC) hearing aids programmed to individual hearing losses, can reduce listening effort for effective communication. If DTC aids can provide benefits beyond amplification, then they could be an affordable option to reduce barriers to care and improve hearing aid uptake in adults with hearing loss.

Subjective and Audiological Benefit of BONEBRIDGE (BCI602) With Two Different Fitting Strategies...

Bone Conduction DeafnessQuality of Life2 more

The Bonebridge (BB) is a partially implantable active transcutaneous bone conduction hearing system manufactured by MED-EL Elektromedizinische Geräte Gesellschaft m.b.H. (MED-EL, Innsbruck, Austria). The BB augments hearing by providing acoustic input to the inner ear via bone conduction. In 2017 Hodgetts & Scollie introduced a new fitting algorithm called DSL-BCD. The DSL-BCD algorithm was developed especially for the characteristics of bone conduction devices (BCD). If there is a benefit on the patient level in hearing outcomes when comparing the application of DSL-BCD in comparison to DSL v5 when using the BB, was not yet investigated. The aim of this clinical study is to show the improvement in audiological performance and subjective satisfaction with the BCI602 and SAMBA 2 audio processor in patients with conductive hearing loss compared to the unaided condition and to evaluate performance differences through application of 2 different fitting algorithms, namely DSL v5 and DSL-BCD.

Comparing Self-Fitting Strategies in the Lexie Powered by Bose Hearing Aids

Hearing Loss

More than 1.5 billion people around the world experience hearing loss, of whom at least 430 million experience disabling hearing loss that will require rehabilitation. The majority of people have mild to moderate hearing loss and can benefit from hearing aids. However, hearing aid adoption around the world has been low, with global hearing aid coverage being less than 11%. This is partly due to limited access to hearing healthcare services and the high cost of hearing devices. However, there have been significant efforts to improve access to hearing healthcare services. This includes rapid advances in hearing aids and new service-delivery models leading to more affordable and accessible options such as Over-the-Counter (OTC) hearing aids. On the 17th of October 2022, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) established a regulatory category for OTC hearing aids. The final rule allows consumers with perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment to purchase hearing aids directly from stores or online retailers without the need for a medical exam, prescription or a fitting by an audiologist. The FDA defined two sub-categories for OTC hearing aids, namely 1) OTC hearing aids with standardized output profiles (i.e., pre-set programs) and 2) self-fitting OTC hearing aids which allow users to program their hearing aids with a self-fitting strategy and also customize their hearing aid settings according to their needs and preferences. Sabin et al. (2020) was the first study to validate a self-fitting method using the Bose prototype hearing aid. This self-fitting method allowed users to select their own signal processing parameters using a mobile application consisting of two wheels that simultaneously control the gain and compression of all frequency bands. Sabin et al. (2020) evaluated the real-world performance of this approach by comparing gain, sound quality and clinical measures of hearing aid benefit and satisfaction between a group using the self-fitting method and a group that was professionally fitted with the same hearing aid. The gain selected by the self-fit group was within 1.8 dB overall and 5.6 dB per band compared to the gain selected by the audiologist. Participants in the self-fit group reported better sound quality, and there were no differences in clinical measures of hearing aid benefit or satisfaction. Although a number of studies have compared self-fitting OTC devices to conventional hearing aids fitted by hearing healthcare professionals, no study has compared different self-fitting strategies in the same OTC device. Therefore, this study aims to compare the existing self-fitting strategy of the Lexie Powered by Bose hearing aids (i.e., direct adjustment) to a recently validated in-situ audiometry fitting strategy. The in-situ audiometry fitting strategy consists of in-situ thresholds measurements conducted at 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz through the hearing aids, which will be used with a proprietary fitting algorithm that is based on National Acoustics Laboratories' Non-Linear Version 2 (NAL-NL2) to self-program the hearing aids.

Verification of the Efficacy/Safety of the Intratympanic Drug Delivery for Hearing Loss

Hearing LossSudden5 more

This study is a prospective, randomized pilot study. To verify an efficacy and safety of the Intratympanic drug delivery vehicle, patients who have not responded to the existing standard treatment will be enrolled. Hearing test, endoscopy of tympanic membrane and CT scans will be conducted after intratympanic treatment for evaluation.

Rehabilitation of Narrative Language in Children With Hearing Impairment and Developmental Language...

Hearing Impaired ChildrenDevelopmental Language Disorder

The importance of narrative skills is evident in their role in language development and their relation to important academic skills namely reading, comprehension, and writing. Narratives are also essential for competent social skills, and children with delayed language development are usually found to have less proficient social communication skills. Research demonstrates the effects of narrative language intervention on improved narrative structure and complexity in addition to improved receptive and expressive use of syntax, morphology and general language use in children with narrative language impairment in various types of communication disorders. Given the importance of narrative language abilities in language development and due to lack of research targeting the assessment and intervention of narrative language skills of Arabic speaking children with language impairments, this study is dedicated towards the assessment of narrative language in Arabic speaking children and the development of a comprehensive intervention program targeting narrative language skills and its application on children with hearing impairment and developmental language disorder.

Hearing Impairment, Strategies and Outcomes in VA Emergency Departments

Hearing LossEmergency Service1 more

HearVA involves six VA facility emergency departments (ED) over a 3-year intervention period. The first part of this study will test whether providing personal amplifiers to Veteran ED patients who self-report hearing difficulty is acceptable to these patients, can improve their hearing, enhance understanding of discharge instructions, and can reduce the risk of coming back to the ED in a short period of time (3 days and 30 days). The second part of the study will then identify whether ED staff can implement this program and achieve similar results. The second part will give ED staff increasing levels of responsibility for screening Veterans for hearing difficulty and providing personal amplifiers when such difficulty is detected.
