Vitamin D DeficiencyThe investigators investigated the ability of narrowband ultraviolet B (nbUVB) treatment in the maintenance of vitamin D levels achieved during the summer in Finland. The investigators randomized 37 subjects into groups of 17 and 18 subjects. The other group received 2 standard erythema doses (SED) nbUVB exposure every other week until week 24, and serum 25(OH)D levels were measured at the onset and at weeks 6, 14, 20, 26 and 30. The control group was not illuminated and serum samples were analyzed correspondingly. Punch biopsies were taken at the onset and at week 14 for CYP27A1 and CYP27B1 enzyme expression level analyses.
Vitamin D Supplementation in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus Type 2
Diabetes Mellitus Type 2Vitamin D DeficiencyBackground and Objectives : The presence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We aim to see whether supplementation of vitamin D in these patients helps to improve the endothelial function (EF) a surrogate marker of CVD risk. Hypothesis: Vitamin D supplementation in patients with T2DM and low serum 25(OH) D concentrations (<30ng/ml) will improve EF as measured by the Endo-PAT machine by 0.4 units (30% improvement over baseline) and/or will result in a increase of EPCs (CD133+/KDR+) and CD45dim CD34+/KDR. The investigators will test this hypothesis by comparing 2 groups of T2DM patients randomized to placebo or vitamin D3 for 16 weeks. Methods: This is a 16 weeks trial in which 120 T2DM patients will be screened with the aim to recruit 60 T2DM patients with vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency. Out of these 60 patients , 30 patients will be started on vitamin D supplementation and 30 patients will be given a matched placebo. Endothelial function (EF) will be checked before and after supplementation to see a change in EF. Significance of Project: If this study shows a significant improvement of EF, it would justify larger scale studies to show that vitamin D supplementation in patients with T2DM mitigates CVD risk and vitamin D supplementation in patients with T2DM and vitamin D deficiency to improve CVD risk.

Vitamin D DeficiencyThoracic Surgery3 moreOur research group has shown that almost all children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are vitamin D deficient following heart surgery. This work strongly suggests that the vitamin D intake presently recommended for healthy children, and also given to children with CHD, is inadequate to prevent vitamin D deficiency following surgery. Unfortunately, there have been no studies investigating any other vitamin D dose in children with heart disease. Recently, a higher dose of vitamin D intake has been approved (by the Institute of Medicine and Health Canada) and recent work on healthy children has shown it to be safe. The objective of this study is to determine whether this recently approved higher dose of vitamin D can safely reduce the number of children who are vitamin D deficient following surgery. This dose evaluation study will also evaluate whether it is possible to perform a large study (across Canada) to determine whether vitamin D supplementation can improve outcomes following surgery. It is hypothesized that a daily high dose vitamin D regimen, modeled on the Institute of Medicine daily upper tolerable intake level (UL), will significantly reduce vitamin D deficiency following CHD surgery, when compared with usual intake.
