Effect of Vitamin D on Periodontal Disease

Vitamin D DeficiencyPeriodontal Diseases

Background. Vitamin D has both direct effects on bone metabolism and an antimicrobial effect on periodontopathogens. It also inhibits inflammatory mediators that contribute to periodontal destruction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between serum 1.25-hydroxyvitamin D (1.25(OH)2D3) and 25(OH)D levels and periodontal inflammation. Methods. This study included 28 subjects with chronic gingivitis, 29 subjects with chronic periodontitis and 25 periodontally healthy subjects. Blood samples were collected from the participants to determine serum levels of 25(OH)D, 1.25(OH)2D3, tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α), C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin 6 (IL-6). Clinical parameters were recorded. Results were statistically analysed with a Shapiro-Wilk's test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, Wilcoxon test and post-hoc multiple comparison test.

Vitamin D in Ectopic Pregnancies

Ectopic PregnancyVitamin D Deficiency

According to recent evidences, vitamin D was found to have important roles in female reproductive system, both in physiological and also pathological mechanisms. Since vitamin D is tightly related with calcium metabolism, both molecules were reported to be associated with some pregnancy complications including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, low birth weight, preterm delivery, and cesarean section rates. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the vitamin D levels in ectopic pregnancies, which may have clinical importance in the etiology of this disorder.

Uroflowmetry Results and Vitamin D Levels

Lower Urinary Tract SymptomsVitamin D Deficiency1 more

The investigators aimed to evaluate the relationship between LUTS and vitamin D with uroflowmetry parameters in female patients. They found no relation between vitamin D levels and LUTS in respect to uroflowmetry. However, in low vitamin D patients, Ca is related with urologic problems. The investigators believe that there is a need for studies emphasizing serum Ca levels in addition to vitamin D levels in patients with LUTS.

Vitamin D Levels and Postoperative Pain in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Vitamin D DeficiencyPostoperative Pain

The deficiency of vitamin D is common in patients with gastrointestinal system disorders. Vitamin D has been associated with chronic non-specific musculoskeletal pain and migraines due to anti-inflammatory effects. This prospective observational study will undergo elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery between 18 and 65 years, is planned to participate in ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) 1-3, 90 volunteer patients. In preoperative evaluation, the remaining 3 ml of blood was centrifuged from the routine received blood to determine the level of vitamin D will be kept. Postoperative will be applied to patient controlled analgesia to all patients for 24 hours. To determine the level of postoperative pain, the visual analog scale (VAS) will be used in the clock unit and at the service 6, 12 and 24 hours. In this study, the investigators aimed to test the hypothesis of relation to pain and opioid consumption in acute postoperative (24 hours) of perioperative low-vitamin D.

Reference Interval of Vitamin D of Coastal Fishermen in Cox's Bazar District of Bangladesh

Vitamin D Deficiency

Lack of adequate sun exposure due to urbanization is prone to hypovitaminosis D. Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D) deficiency is now a major health concern in the western world. Recent data suggest that Vitamin D level in the Bangladeshi population is also very low. However, the cutoff value used to determine vitamin D deficiency is not yet validated for our ethnic group; we also don't know the optimal vitamin D level for our population. Before coming to any firm conclusion regarding nationwide vitamin D deficiency, we must know the Optimal range of serum Vitamin D for our people of Bangladesh. As sunlight is the primary source of vitamin D and adequate sun exposure alone is sufficient to produce enough vitamin D to maintain the physiological demand without producing toxicity. According to Holick's rule, exposure to sunlight at the face and both arms for 25 min, 3 times a week should maintain adequate vitamin D status. In Indonesia, it was found that after exposure to sunlight at this specific time and duration for 6 weeks, the mean 25(OH)D levels of participants increased from 59 nmol/L at the baseline to 84 nmol/L.In India, exposure to sunlight for 30 minutes, between 11 am and 2 pm, three times a week, is sufficient to maintain adequate serum vitamin D concentration. Therefore it could be assumed that healthy subjects without any risk factors for vitamin D deficiency and having adequate sun exposure should maintain an Optimal serum vitamin D concentration. Here Optimal means a range where there will be no features of insufficiency or toxicity. In this cross-sectional study, we want to find out the serum vitamin D level of such a population, representing the Optimal level of vitamin D for Bangladeshi people.

Comparison of Maternal and Neonatal Vitamin D Levels in Term Neonates With and Without Early Onset...

Vitamin D Deficiency

Neonatal sepsis is a clinical syndrome characterized by signs and symptoms of infection with or without accompanying bacteremia in the first month of life which is still an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble steroid hormone that primarily contributes to the maintenance of normal calcium homeostasis and skeletal mineralization. In addition to its classical role in bone metabolism, vitamin D also has immunomodulatory effects on immune function. Although some studies reported a link between vitamin D deficiency and critical illness in adults, a direct relationship has not been directly shown yet. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study evaluated the association between EOS and maternal/neonatal vitamin D levels. The objective of this prospective study is to determine the possible role of maternal and neonatal plasma vitamin D levels on EOS development in term infants. We also aim to evaluate possible effect of the severity of vitamin D deficiency on EOS development in the study population.

The Effect of Maternal and Neonatal Vitamin D Levels on Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Preterm...

Vitamin D Deficiency

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) of the newborn, also called as hyaline membrane disease, is the most common cause of respiratory distress in premature infants, correlating with structural and functional lung immaturity. The pathophysiology of RDS is complex. Immature type II alveolar cells produce less surfactant that causes an increase in alveolar surface tension and a decrease in compliance. This resultant atelectasis lead to pulmonary vascular constriction, hypoperfusion, and lung tissue ischemia. RDS and prolonged ventilation and associated systemic/lung injury may also contribute to long term oxygen dependency and may result in bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Vitamin D is a fat-soluble steroid hormone that primarily contributes to the maintenance of normal calcium homeostasis and skeletal mineralization. In addition to its classical role in bone metabolism, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with impaired pulmonary function, increased incidence of viral and bacterial infections and inflammatory lung diseases. Although exact mechanisms are not fully understood, vitamin D appears to impact on a variety of inflammatory and structural cells within the lung including macrophages, lymphocytes and epithelial cells. To our best of knowledge, no study has evaluated the effect of vitamin D levels on the severity and presence of RDS in preterm infants. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the possible role of maternal/neonatal vitamin D levels on RDS development in preterm infants. We also aim to determine the possible association between maternal/neonatal vitamin D levels and the incidence of BPD and other neonatal morbidities.
